Do I understand comment and feedback correctly?

Hi everyone!

Help me out, if you will please, with my understanding of commenting on someone's website, or giving feedback on someone's website.

This is what my understanding of the two is...

...that they are two very different things!

When a member asks for feedback on their website they want advice on the structure, content, appearance and functionality of their site and the response is given outside of the website.

When a member requests comments on a page they are asking for a comment about specific content given as a visitor to that page, not a technical critique of the page itself.

When someone comments on your website as a member of WA and gives advice on page set-up and technical aspects, that is visible to other visitors on your page.

Recently a very well meaning person gave me some great advice that I really appreciated as a comment on my page, and I feel bad that I can not approve this comment.

So, am I understanding things correctly or being my usual anal retentive, crazy self?

You are understanding it perfectly Kari. I like the way you've described it, succinctly, politely. I have read a few posts on this subject, some members are tearing their hair out about this (excuse the pun).

Pun excused, lol

You are right on course, your understanding is quite in place. All the best, God bless you.

You are correct. That is exactly my understanding too.

You have it correct. It is people who get this side of it wrong.

No KariLee, you do make sense if you are a very sensitive person. If you do not want a comment on your website but have it exposed in the open here in the forum, just say so when you ask for critique. Otherwise whoever comments on your site directly wouldn't know any better.

Hi Mike!
I know what you mean about asking for opinions and being open to criticism. I just don't think a published web page that is viewed by your audience (customers) is the proper place for that, and the rules need to be followed. I agree with you that this forum (WA) is the proper place and that constructive criticism is valuable. I also know that the members of this community are very diverse and by and large, well meaning.

Thank you for pointing out the difference. I think many of us never heard how it was supposed to be.

You are absolutely correct! In comments, you are to interact with the content. Feedback, you look at background color, do the widgets work, overall appearance and function of the website... Great job--go for it!

Thanks Ed. We are all learning constantly!

Got it nailed, KariLee. Site Comments is for engagement regarding blog or page content. Opinions about the message you have sent out through that blog.
Site Feedback is the structure - theme, images, too many affiliate ads, etc. People's learned and not so learned opinion about what it looks like.
I have disapproved comments on Site Comments that should have been a feedback. So don't feel bad, just keep doing what you know is right.

Thanks, Duncan. I hope this will help a few members so they can give proper feedback or comments. I don't think people mix these up intentionally.
