The World Wasn't Created in One Day - Good Posts Usually Aren't Either

I have a confession to make, but I claim ignorance for the most part. I'm milking this newbie thing as long as I can. I don't know where I got this from, especially since I'm not one who has to complete tasks before hitting the pillow.

I had it in my head that I had to finish and publish my work once I sat down to write content for my website. What I realized was that I was finishing too soon or finishing poorly for the sake of finishing. I could sometimes tell that I was getting tired, but I would push on.

I have come to realize that it is ok, maybe even better, to do as much as I can and come back the next day and finish what I started. I started an article yesterday and got a lot done, but I had to leave the rest for today. Not only was my brain refreshed, but I was able to create more complete content and my largest word count post to date.

I'm learning to slow down and do it right. Yes, getting a website established takes constant publishing, but quality is more important.

If you find yourself rushing to get content published, step back and asked yourself what's more important to your readers...a lot of words or quality content they want to read.

So...if the world wasn't created in one day, what makes me think I can create a good post in that time? I'm learning y'all!

Have a blessed weekend!

Karen

Good Morning Karen,

Do not forget we are our own boss. Nobody tells us we decide for ourselves.
It normally takes me 2 to 3 days to write a post. Then come the photos, videos, title, tags, and description. I am always very happy when I have my 2 posts ready for publishing by Monday.
I try to have a set hour for post writing but often have to grab some more time elsewhere during the day.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Yes Taetske, we are our own boss! I probably got that thought process from working in procurement where I had hard deadlines. I would sometimes still be at work at 8pm trying to get a document completed. I’m glad those days are over.

I'm the same way, Karen. Once I've started writing, I want to complete it. So what I have been doing lately is get all my research done, then the next day write the blog. I always write mine down on paper first, it's just easier for me that way. Then the next day after that I publish it to my site. That way, I can rephrase any grammar to sound better, then do the spell check and so forth.

Have a blessed weekend
Charlotte

That’s awesome that you’ve figured out what works best for you. Thanks for sharing these tips Charlotte!

What you say is true. I go through a process. I research; make copies of the articles I want to use for my story information, then read all the articles I've printed, and sometimes don't do any more until the next day. Then I figure out my keyword start writing. Sometimes I outline, but sometimes it is pretty easy to figure out what parts of the post come from which source.

When I type the post, I might do some changes then to smooth things out. Then it goes online.

Often I'll take something I've written to my writer's group. It's usually already online by the time I go there, but if they offer suggestions or corrections, I go back to the website and correct the post.

Yes, it's a process.

A process and a learning experience! I definitely feel more enlightened after reading y’alls comments. Thank you Fran!

Great point Karen..there is no need to rush.

It's going to take GOOGLE quite a while to find your stuff anyways, so it's best to make it good before they do...
I usually take a couple of days to research my article, write 500 words one day, 500 the next and then it's ready to polish and publish...do this 3 times a week and you have 3 really good articles going on your blogsite..do that for a year and you have 150 plus articles that all have the potential to earn you a decent income.

It's about being consistent and not putting yourself under pressure....
Be in it for the long run, treat your site seriously like a real business and it will surely bare fruit.

Sounds like you have a really plan!

I do Karen...I think you have to have one. I am writing 3 decent (hopefully) researched articles a week and publishing them. I have done 6 in the last 2 weeks and have another ready to publish later tonight. I make a Friday deadline every week to have 3 new articles done..and I am going to do that for the next year. And then, hopefully, my site is getting traffic and some revenue, I will be posting at least 3 more each week too.... That's my plan and I am going to stick at it and see where it takes me,..
I have to keep it simple that way it's easy to follow...
Take care
Tony

Great point, Karen. I've been guilty of doing that with my self-imposed writing deadlines on my books, and I've found that when I'm tired, I seem to have made lots of mistakes when I would go back and edit on the next day. Finally I've learned to go slower, and it has certainly eliminated many of my former mistakes. When I get down and dirty to writing my website content, I'll put this acquired habit to work there too. I'm glad to know that I'm not alone!

Jeff

It’s funny how we put these expectations on ourselves. I see more and more in this community that we’re not alone.

Karen,

It must be in our nature--when we write many of us are perfectionists, but no matter how many times we read what we write later, there seems to always be a change that can be made. I finally have to put my foot down and release or publish what I've written and hope for the best. We can be our own worst critics!

Jeff

Yes, there will always be something to change, but it’s not just grammar, but being clear and including the right amount of information.

There’s a fine line between going too fast and holding on too long. A lot to take in!
