Feeling blue.
Hi guys,
As most of you know, I like to write happy blog posts, about my successes here at WA and in my professional life as an engineer.
But today's post is not one of those. Like many of you, I love receiving organic comments on my posts - it is such a great feeling. So today when I got a notification that I had an organic comment I was so thrilled.
That is, until I read what the comment had to say. It basically trashed one of my recipes. I don't expect people to be dishonest and say they love something when they don't, but there are better ways to express that, perhaps asking why they didn't turn out well and ask for some guidance.
But these turned out really well for me and I got a ton of compliments on it. I don't put out random articles for the sake of writing - I really believe in the awesome-ness of each and every one of my recipes.
But no, this person decided to flat out say "this is terrible." I know "haters gonna hate" but for a second there it really made me question why I even cook and blog.
Really sucky feeling, and it makes me infinitely more grateful for this wonderful WA community, where we encourage each other to do better and offer constructive criticism as opposed to flat out shut each other down.
Much love to all of you <3 <3 Putting yourself out there is really hard and today one of my worst fears came true, but I know I can count on all of your support <3
Janani <3

First of all, if I don't like your recipe, I'm probably not even going to tell you about it. Fact is, we don't all enjoy the same flavor profile.
to help you out today, I just want to remind you that this thinking works in reverse also. Shirk it off. That person doesn't like what you like. they should have been able to tell from the ingredients that they wouldn't like it OR...They messed up the recipe and refuse to consider that as a possibility.
Either way, I don't want to go with the "haters gonna hate" thing. When I've done that, I find I dismiss the message altogether and there might be something useful in that message.
If there's not, then this is a troll. I have great disdain for trolls. They offer nothing to the internet community and the offer nothing to the community in which they reside,
A troll is worthless. Definitely not worthy of changing your mood.
Very true. Everyone's tastes are different, and we should just all respect that without being nasty..
Ah, yes there will always be some negative comments. It's so unfortunate because those will stick to us much more than the good ones. We don't remember the 10 people being nice as much as that one person bullying us.
The best advice I can give is just to remember whether it's negative or positive it's ALL good attention! You also can never make everyone happy, especially those that CHOOSE to be negative with everything. On top of it, being online gives these people an easy way to be insensitive.
Because it's really just a putdown without any constructive criticism I would definitely just ignore it. (At least, as well as one can..)
That's really good advice... choose to focus on all the good things, instead of the one bad thing.
Janani,
I'm sorry that the person was cruel. However, from an outside, objective stand point, that tells me that your website and recipes must be awesome.
After reading the comments on many newspaper articles, YouTube videos and blog sites, it seems that successful people always attract some negative haters.
The comments can be delete or you just have to ignore them so that no one criticizes you for filtering your comments.
So, GREAT JOB!!!!! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! It is just bound to happen when you expose yourself on the internet, but that is what filtering is for, both in your brain and on the site :D
Don't let that person get to you. You're always going to have some nasty people out there who say horrible things about what you do. Trust me, I've had it happen to some of my videos on my YouTube channel. I just shrug it off and go on as I realize that I can't please everyone, but SOMEONE out there WILL appreciate what I do and respond nicely to that.
I love the supportive community too. Ignore that comment and keep doing what you love. I hope you feel better soon.
If you don't have haters, you're doing something wrong. Sounds like you are doing something right. Keep pushing.

Sometimes this happens, although on average, there are more positive statements than negative, therefore, a positive statement is just around the corner.
Alex
There are so many more positive reactions, and it's important that we focus on the positive instead of the random rare negative moment. :)
