Hey there all my Wealthy Affiliate friends. It's Wingman Chance and I'm back from my hiatus. Did you miss me? Come on, tell the truth! Even a bit?

JrzyGrlbj and I decided we would do this blog together.

We now have 900 followers in our Wealthy Affiliate network and this is our 137th blog post. We are grateful to all of you for your wonderfully amazing support and encouragement. We truly appreciate all of you and just wanted to say that before we started this blog. So let's get right down to it and get started.

Do You Update Your Old Posts?

When you start following the training - the focus is on producing quality content and thinking ahead of the possible ideas you could write about.

But when you have been working on your site for more than 6 months - you'd end up having a lot of posts on your site.

Some might not perform at all and some might perform better than the other ones - but did you ever think about updating your old posts?

Why is Updating Your Posts Important

One of the biggest benefits of updating your posts is the experience and your skills. As you continue working on your site and you learn new things - you will always have more experience and your skills will always be better.

Therefore, once you go back to the posts you wrote months ago if not half a year ago - you'd be able to take a look at those posts with a better perspective.

Some members might immediately notice what might be missing from these posts. Therefore, you can be a fresh set of eyes without having to ask anyone else for their opinion.

When it comes down to the ranking - updating your older posts by expanding the word count, adding more valuable information, and updating it with the newest information will always help improve the ranks.

But you shouldn't forget your audience either.

It's all about forming a personal relationship with your audience and help them find a solution to their problem.

By going back to a post, doing additional research, and finding new ways to add more valuable information will help your readers which will pay off in the long run.

There are many more benefits to this - but how do you actually update your old posts?

How to Update Your Old Posts

Which Post to Update?

Should you focus on top-performing posts or posts that aren't performing at all? It's better to have a few posts that rank very well than many posts that rank decently.

Therefore, you should start by focusing on the top-performing posts. Jaaxy has a Site Rank feature that is very helpful at finding out which one of your posts ranks very well.

More In-Depth

The first thing you should do when you're trying to update a post is to find out whether there is more information you could add to the post to improves the value.

You also always want to provide more value than your competitors since this will result in better rankings - but you don't want to copy. Copying is obvious and it won't do you any good in the long run.

Try brainstorming to find out if you know any more information about the topic than you knew when you were writing the post.

Resonate With Readers More

As you add more information, improves the length of the post, and you answer more questions (or help solve more problems) - it's important to resonate with your readers more.

This will help increase the time on page and reduce the bounce rate. But you want to ensure your posts are easy to read, you engage with your readers, and you help them retain their focus on your blog post.

This will build trust and help you connect with your readers more.

Keywords

How sufficient was your keyword research before writing the post? Chances are, you could do another keyword research and find more keywords you could add to the post.

Also, you should re-check your keyword density and find out if there's any other way you could optimize your post for the keyword so it improves the ranking.

Catchy Title

You shouldn't forget about your title. Catchy titles win the clicks while quality articles retain the readers on the page.

If you aren't happy with the title and you think you could do better - you should rename the article. Adding a keyword in there is also a great idea - if you haven't done it the first time.

Double-Check SEO

How well did you optimize your blog post for search engines?

Go through your post and re-check every single thing including image alt tags, keyword density, URL length, tags, meta description, readability, and a lot of other things.

I highly recommend starting with posts that are ranking on the second page. What do you think?

Hi Barb,

I have gone back and updated old posts. I don't usually add any keywords as I like Jay's recommendations of putting it in the title, first paragraph, and then one more time near the end.

Google knows if you're keyword stuffing and won't rank as well for it. I'm not saying you are recommending, just clarifying in case someone is reading into what you say in your post.

Now, I love the idea of revamping to make the post clearer or adding new information. I don't recommend messing with posts or content that is ranking well. Unless, it is adding new up to date information, like newer technology. Especially if it is a niche site.

I like to leave that alone. I will go back into one that is not ranking well and make it better by doing some of your methods.

Overall, not a bad idea to update. In some cases, I would just rather keep adding new content than go back to the old stuff. Maybe once I am making money with a site, then go back to see if it can be updated to improve it.

Great post! I wish you the best!

I forgot to mention... when things like Amazon happen... then we don’t have a choice and have to update our sites then. 🤪

That is so true, Bob.
Thanks for bringing that up.
Very good point indeed.

👍😀

😎🙂

I always think, this week, but then my hands are just so full. And now since Amazon dropped commissions, I`m trying to change over 1000 links(not sure exactly how many they are but sure minimum 1000)
Given I have to tweak some posts, updating content has been put to the back of the queue once more.
Blogging is hard, long, full-time work but I`d not have it any other way.
It gives me a thrill to wake up in the morning to realize I made a sale while I was sleeping.Or coming from my offline job to find + made a sale/s, there is no better feeling.

I know exactly what you mean.
It happens to me too. We just have to make it one of the priorities that we have a tackle.

Good luck.
Barbara

Every update frustrates me.

Each time I update my posts I find some craziness and cannot believe I am the person who actually wrote it lol. My life before Grammarly was disgraceful, to say the least.

Re SEO, after watching Jay's SEO 101 video I went back through all my posts. That took a hot minute.

Still working on those catchy titles and such. My impressions are very high compared to my clicks. CTR is very poor, like below 10% so I know something is wrong there.

Thanks for the tips Barb.

Crystal,
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I'm very sure that if you keep working on the updates, things will begin to fall in line.

I appreciate your input.
Barbara

I am updating my old posts and adding new content too. Refreshing old posts to increase SEO is necessary.

Yes, it is very important to do.
Thank you for adding your thoughts to the conversation.

Barbara

Thanks, Barbara. Lots of good stuff. Keep up the good work.

You're very welcome, Earl.

Glad you found some interest in my blog.
