What kind of posts do readers want to read on your website or blog?

I have been asked a few times about blog posts and what makes a good blog post.

For me, when I write a post, it has to be short, clear and beautiful (with images). In my view, not too many readers spend time reading long online articles. I like to write about what I know. If I don't know much about a subject I want to write about, I would research it.

I have blogged for almost two years on my blog, tribalmystic dot me. I wrote long posts when I first began blogging. I realised that not many people read these posts. Today, I use both long and short articles. I choose the subject I know. I try really hard to keep it short and simple. This is because I like writing and storytelling and sometime I go overboard.

If I feel exhausted writing the article, I know the readers will be exhausted reading it. I am trying to write the same way for my WA website: webearner.net which I built here on WA.

I find that the most popular posts I write are the posts of less than 300 words and have lots of beautiful and interesting images. I also try to add an attention grabbing headline. This post is getting too long so I will stop it now.

In summary, my suggestions for a blog post/article for your website are:

  • Choose a subject you know. (Or research very well and add links)
  • Make an outline of what you want to say
  • Write 300 words or less, if not, break up your post into two or three posts.
  • Add a great headline or title
  • Use a lot of good images
  • Check your overall structure, facts, spelling, typos etc before you publish. I always try to edit as many times as I can because English is my 4th language. I make mistakes.
  • Ask for feedback once you have posted

Have fun writing your blogs posts.

Thank you very much for this blog. I will definitely start applying this to my TechnicalGeek website.
Since my goal is to help anyone at any level I could save the longer posts for the more experienced posts so that newbies don't get bored.

Hi Pete - thank you. BTW - have you been to PNG?

I stopped in Port Moresby on ship enroute to Singapore from Auckland in Sep 1971, we were there one night only. I wrote a blog about it a while back.

Great post! Sound advice! Ultimately we want to make posts that are easy to consume, and relate to our audience.
