Writing tip I'd like to share

Hello! I wanted to share a writing tip I picked up that's helped me quite a bit. I recently read an autobiography by Orel Hershiser. He was a hall of fame major league baseball pitcher who played most of his career for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the beginning of the book he talked about how he overcame some writer's block.

He said that he envisioned himself in a coffee shop sitting across the table from a friend as he wrote. He said he wrote just as if he was talking to that friend in a normal conversation. This helped the words and sentences come to him more naturally and things flowed much easier for him. I found that this approach has helped me immensely when writing a blog or page.

Before I read his little tip I was so worried about using the exact correct word or phrase that the writing experience felt awkward and almost painful. I now picture myself sitting across the table talking to a friend like he mentioned and the words definitely come to me much easier. I just wanted to share this little tidbit of information in case it may help someone else. Thanks for reading and I wish everyone the best of luck!

I've been told this advice before, and it really works! It takes the pressure off to sound perfect (whatever that means), and makes the tone of whatever we write more "real". This is a great reminder, Jon - thanks! Heather:)

You're welcome Heather and thanks for commenting!

You're quite welcome!

Hi Jon , what an awesome tip.I will certainly give it a go . I find it also helpful to write down my thoughts and ideas on a piece of paper. The " old fashioned " ways are sometimed the best. Cheers Anke

Hi Anke yes I write my ideas down on paper first too and like the old fashioned way as well. Thanks for your comment!

This is the most beautiful advice I've ever heard! Sometimes the best ones are so easy, we tend to not even be aware of it! I can definitely see how this opens the floodgates to let you write naturally ! I truly appreciate you sharing this awesome tip!!

You're welcome!

That's great Jon, I've been trying to adhere to that too, easier said than done.

I keep falling back into technical writing mode.

Thank you! Yes I catch myself doing that once in a while too. I try to snap out of it and picture myself back in the coffee shop.

Jon
