How Less Time Makes Me More Productive

People often think that having more time means getting more done. But for me, the opposite is true. I’ve found that when I have less time, I’m more focused and productive. When I have more time, I tend to become lazy and disorganized.
The Productivity Paradox: There’s a saying called Parkinson’s Law: "Work expands to fill the time available for its completion." This rings true in my life. I’m a father of three, with a full-time job, a wife, side projects, and even time to play golf. My schedule is packed, and that forces me to stay on top of everything.
When I have a lot to do, I focus on what’s most important. But when I have more free time, I often procrastinate, get distracted, and end up getting less done.
The Power of Deadlines: Deadlines are key to my productivity. When I know I only have a short window to finish something, I work faster and more efficiently. For example, if I only have 30 minutes before the kids come home, I can get more done than if I had a full afternoon. The urgency keeps me on track and prevents distractions.

Time Management Tips: Here are a few things that help me stay productive even when time is tight:
- Time Blocking: I set specific times for tasks and stick to them.
- Prioritizing: I focus on the most important tasks first.
- Setting Short Deadlines: I create my own deadlines to keep the pressure on, even when I have more time.
The Downside of Too Much Time: When I have too much time, I often overthink tasks, get distracted, and end up accomplishing less. Without the pressure of time, it’s easy to become complacent. Recognizing this helps me stay disciplined, even when my schedule is lighter.
For me, less time often leads to greater productivity. The pressure helps me focus and get things done. On the other hand, having too much time can lead to laziness and disorganization.
