Characters And Trademarks - Best Practices

Howdy Folks;

I've been thinking (can you smell it?) about Print On Demand products and the quotes/sayings that go on them.

Can you, for example have a saying on a mug or t-shirt like "I smell like a lying Pinocchio" or "My Love Life Is A Mission Impossible"

What, I think, I'm trying to say is whether it is legal to allude to characters, films, tv series etc. without falling foul of any legal aspect that would result in a "cease and desist" attorney letter?

Obviously, I wouldn't include any bespoke imagery or stills from a film - just mentioning the character or program title or a particular trait of said character.

Thanks for any input.
