First page top three positions on Google.

I have been riding the number four position on the first page of Google for some time now but for some unknown reason I can't get the ranking any higher.

I have noticed a shaded area around the top three positions. Can anyone tell what this represents

I have been holding first page number one and two position on Bing but I'm up and down on Yahoo from first page number one to number six

I have been changing or adding to my site daily and I was wondering if this has any affect on the rankings dropping.

Reasons I ask is one of my sites went from page #3 to #15 overnight after I added a article I wrote and posted. It is now back to page 3 and climbing.

Just curious if any of the long time IM's could give me a few pointers on how to get to number one.
