BLAZING CARS, GUNS, AND RACISM

There happened to be a time when Murray and Rawlings once again got together to head off to West Virginia, as usual Rawlings bought an old jalopy to resell when he got to West Virginia. Well this time they got as far as the mountains of West Virginia when the car conked out on them, trying as hard as they could, they could not get that car running again. Rawlings said to Murray I have never seen a car on fire going off a bluff, Murray replied neither have I, right then and there the end of that car was decided.

Those two squirted lighter fluids all over the front and rear seats, then they set it ablaze, they had previously put the car in neutral and released the emergency brake to be sure the car rolled easy. Once the car was blazing away the two of them pushed it forward and over the bluff, watching in glorious amazement while cheering as the car bounced down the mountain blazing away and tearing apart. It was one of the most exciting times of their lives, almost like one of those scenes we see in the movies except this time it was real.

As they turned away from the bluff and walked to the highway, they immediately noticed the state trooper sitting there, they knew he must have seen the whole thing. He never said a word to them about the incident he just asked them where they were headed, they told him Washington DC and he told them to jump in to his squad car that he would give them a ride for the first 50 miles. They both knew he wanted to get them well on your way and out of his area as quick as possible but that was okay with them, they just needed a ride.

After the state trooper dropped them off, they hitchhiked another ride with some strange looking fellows Rawlings sat in the front seat next to the driver and Murray sat in the backseat next to two other fellows. As they drove down the road suddenly the driver pulled out a gun and pointed it at Murray and said if you try anything, I will shoot you dead. Murray did not say a word until they got a few miles down the road then said to Rawlings hey isn’t this where we get out and Rawlings replied yes, it is. At that point, the driver stopped the car and let out 2 nervous passengers who were glad to see that bunch go.

While transporting five jeeps from Fort Meyer South to Fort A P Hill in Virginia they all decided to stop for breakfast at a small restaurant in this little town. They all got out and went in and took seats, after quite a while what appeared to be the cook finally came out from the back and said we do not serve colored in here.

The reason for this comment was because there was one black driver among the five, well that one driver just said to that cook that is okay, I know a better place 4 to 5 blocks down the road that’s better. With that comment said they all got up and left the restaurant and drove to that other restaurant where they all had an excellent breakfast.

Murray and five buddies of his one day in July while sitting around the barracks were approach by a member of Kennedy's political staff. He asked them to all dress in suits and gave each of them $20, afterwards he took them all outside where there were five civilian cars parked and gave them each the key to a car.

He then told them to drive to the Shoreham hotel where the Association of the U.S. Army was holding its yearly meeting. They were to walk up and down the hallways yelling "Elect Kennedy for President", Murray mentioned he even knocked out a few doors. They all spent the better part of 3 to 4 hours doing this until they completed their task. This is only the second time Murray ever earned $20 for just a few hours, considering he only earned $90 a month that was quite a bit for such little effort.

This will be the last installment of the Murray Bennett story for several days. I lost four days of storytelling and dictation because of Dragon 99 problems, so tonight will begin my first attempt to begin over again. I hope everyone will hang in there and I greatly appreciate the way the story has been accepted so far thank you everyone who has been reading and following it.
