Bread or No Bread
August 2011 I was standing in line in a stationery store with a printout of an ebook I wanted to bind. It consisted of more than 100 leaves. A jovial chap entered the store and approached me with curiosity enquiring what I had in my hands. I showed him the title page which read "Think and Grow Rich". He asked if it was any good and I replied that I hadn't completed it yet but what I did read back in 2007 was quite helpful, inspiring me to get the job I wanted and achieve the goal I set at that time in 3 years.
Back in 07 my self worth was very low and restricted me to apply for minimum wage jobs. This particular job paid almost two times the amount of my previous employment. Within this books pages lie the testimony of a man named Edward C Barnes. It has been and will always be an inspiration for me in regards to "desire" within the context of employment and career.
Barnes desired to be in partnership with a notable inventor/entrepreneur of the day yet he had no qualifications for the desired job or money to meet the man in person who lived a couple states over. He hitched a ride on a freight train with only the clothes on his back and reached the doorstep of one Thomas Edison. Upon meeting his quarry without an appointment, Barnes stated his intention and was hired not because of his CV (he didn't have one) but simply because Edison saw in his eyes a certain "desire".
Barnes overcame obstacles like distance and travel fare that stood between him and his goal. Did that stop him? No! Like Barnes, I too overcame obstacles. My first phone call to apply for my desired job was turned down because I didn't have night shift experience. I was disheartened because I had a deep gut feeling that this job was for me. A fortnight later an early evening shift vacancy with a lower wage and less hours within the same company was advertised which I applied for and the rest is his(my)story. I started out part-time but eventually reached full-time, working my desired shift and getting my desired wage reaching and fulfilling my goal on 16 August, 2011.
Back to the jovial chap... He suggested that he knew of a better book. Judging by the tone of his voice and ethnicity I made the calculated guess that he maybe referring to The Holy Bible. Correct I was and without hesitation I quoted 2 Thessalonians 3:10 ending with "yeah I read that book too. Very helpful". Suddenly his whole demeanor changed as though he had seen a ghost. What did I say?
"The man that does not work should not eat."
