Why I Moved to Kenya from South Sudan
This article will tell you a bit of why I decided to leave South Sudan (my home country) to the neighboring country to the south of it, Kenya. I first left South Sudan for Kenya in October 2016, basically to work on my WA business, which didn't work as expected due to some issues.
The Plan
I planned to visit Kenya in February 2025, but I left earlier than planned, and I am now writing this from Nairobi, Kenya. The plan was to reactivate my SIM card (Safaricom), my bank account, and my postal address. This is to help me setup things to make it easier to get paid by Google and WA for my online business.
I arrived at Nairobi around 5:30 AM today (25th January 2025) and waited for Safaricom and Equity Bank to open. At 8:00 AM, I was already at the Safaricom gate on the Kimathi Street. I went in, but I was made aware I can't reactivate my SIM card, which I used everywhere: Amazon, Google, PayPal, etc. I was told the line was sold more than a year ago and I can't recover it unless I have to call the current owner and explain things.
The Unexpected Twists
Before I left Juba, South Sudan on the 22nd of January 2025, I had a family issue that lasted for years. But as an introverted intuitive empath, I kept it to myself. The relationship with my partner proved never to work. Maybe I am not the right man for her? Yeah. It's not always her fault. I am a different and difficult person to live with.
I talk less and write more. I think more than I speak. Yet, I have decided that this relationship won't work. I left without telling anybody about it. I know. We all have our opinions about such life issues, especially as religious folks. But I don't need any advice about this relationship. It's over, though I have to take care of the kids and their mother(s), but not the relationship(s) itself/themselves.
Yes, I can send money through a relative, who will then give it to her/them so she/they could support herself/themselves and the kids. The other two kids are almost adults, so soon they will face their own fates in this world.
As I left Juba at 7:40 AM (GMT+2), our bus almost caught fire somewhere after leaving Gulu in Uganda. I will tell you the full story later on.
We spent the night there from 10:00 PM. We then spent the whole day of 23rd January 2025 there. By 5:30 PM, I decided to leave for Gulu and got a bus to Kampala instead of Nairobi, since there was none.
I had to exchange my Kenya shillings into Uganda shillings so that I could get a bus ticket, water, and some biscuits. The bust left Gulu exactly at 8 minutes pass 12 AM. We arrived at Kampala the following day at 5:40 AM, and I got another shuttle for Malaba, then from there another minibus, and another minibus until we reached to the Busia border where I crossed into Kenya from Uganda.
In Busia around 1:00 PM, I booked a bus for Nairobi. I was told the bus will leave at 3 PM, and later on the time was changed to 6 PM. I waited, but we actually left at exactly 9 PM last night. We then arrived at Nairobi this morning on the 25th of January 2025.
Good enough, I had two Safaricom lines, one was working, and one was sold out. I managed to reactivate the working one, locking out a friend who was using it without a prior notice. I'll have to update him after writing this post.
Moving Forward...
I even went to Equity Bank today after making my second line work, but I can't reactivate my Kenyan bank account because I must have a permit. There are different types of permits. But I was able to check my balance. It's a small amount, but it can help me get started with a rent.
I plan to rent a house where I can have a bed, a table, and a chair. I need a bedroom, a sitting room, and a kitchen room. I need a stable WiFi where I can connect and do my online business, each day. No need for a relationship right now. I don't think I will ever get back into one. The last two are enough. They all ended up with children in need of my support as a father.
Before I could ask for a rent, I have settled with my friend, a bishop. This is why I am able to write this at his house, where I got a bed, a WiFi, and some food. But the plan is to move on with my new life without a wife or girlfriend to disturb my peace. I want to work and work hard before working smart.
Services to offer
I can teach people on how to create KDP accounts, Payoneer accounts, and learn how to upload their books to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing. I can charge a fee for these services. There will be at least three tiers to these services with different prices and values/benefits.
I'll enroll in a school to get a student pass, a kind of a permit to stay in Kenya for at least three years. I can also use my refugee Manifest document as a permit to stay in Kenya for as long as I want and even get a citizenship in the future. I don't want to go back to South Sudan because I lost hope that the country will soon recover from its current political issues, fueled by the war in the neighboring Sudan.
As a professional translator and interpreter, I can work online from here and earn money for a living and fund my WA membership. I can also offer other services at any church and create a ministry that will help me help young people struggling with relationship issues, using my real-life examples of getting into bad ones, and I might then offer them some of my books. This, too, is yet another business opportunity.
In short, I can either teach or help other writers get published on Amazon. I can then translate/interpret for individuals and organizations for cash. Finally, I can start my own coaching sessions at church for a small fee, or for free, and then share some of my books with those willing to learn more about self-help and personal development, one of my niches at WA.
Ah, I can even create websites for individuals and organizations for cash! See, I am a resourceful person that my country, South Sudan, can't make use of right now. But Kenya might make use of me.
If you live in Kenya, let's connect right away! I might be of help, while I make you money. You can even organize these meetings/coaching sessions yourself and use me to teach for cash.
What do you think about these updates? Please share your opinions in the comments below. Just don't advise me on my relationship(s) because I don't need any advice. I have decided to let it go, forever!

Dear John, reading your post was like being part of a movie!
You made us enter in your life with such vivid details that I pictured in my mind
your travel, your past relationships and your determination to create a new life!
I agree with you: there are countries which don't recognize the people talents.
Others, as US, where an entire system helps flourishing your talents.
Well, we will work hard and smart and succeed, ANYWAY.
John, your journey from South Sudan to Kenya is truly inspiring.
Despite facing many challenges, your determination to start anew and create a better future stands out.
Wishing you great success!
Boris
Thanks, Boris. It's as real as all my other stories (in 10 autobiography books on Amazon). I will be writing more in the coming days about these same events, and share them here, just to encourage someone to continue working harder with focus, no matter what life throws at them.
John
Hey, thanks a lot for reading and sharing your experience.
As a former child soldier, born and raised in a war-torn Sudan, I have seen death firsthand.
My books tell the tales, in my own perspective.
Thanks once again for the feedback.
Blessings,
John
