My 500 Word a day Challenge!
So, today I signed up for a very interesting challenge:
To WRITE a MINIMUM of 500 WORDS PER DAY, EVERY DAY FOR 31 DAYS.
The idea is to simply write without editing, writing about any topic of my choice. The great thing about this site is that it gives sample topics one can write about, for each day of 31 challenge days!
That makes it very easy for someone who struggles to get started with blogs/articles because it avails the option of either one’s own topic OR using their suggestion. This would not only save on time wasted thinking about a suitable topic to write about, it will also help with writer’s block.
I think this system will work wonders to propel someone like me, who is new to this arena, to quickly get into the habit of daily writing. Should I miss a day during the challenge period, I will simply go back again and continue without making up for the lost days.
Emails do not form part of the challenge. Only Blogs qualify.
The great thing about this challenge is that you can sign up for free. You simply enter your email address to receive “free updates, writing tips and prompts and other inspiration via email”.
They also allow you to “Grab the widget and embed it wherever you want”.
Also recommended is a link to a site on which you can write everyday and it will record your progress. Besides being beneficial I think this can be very motivational.
For accountability and encouragement they suggest that you join the Facebook group. This I believe is a great tip because most people tend to stick to something more when they are being held accountable.
Also provided is the landscape version of the widget, perfect for Facebook covers.
To get started they encourage bloggers to connect with other bloggers by providing an area where blog links can be added. Or if you choose to, you can simply visit a blog you are interested in to connect with the author.
They also encourage that you tweet your progress with the hash tag #my500words.
This is their suggested list of topics:
1.Commit to the plan.
2.Set some goals.
3.Get up an hour early.
4.Learn to free-write.
5.Write about the most important day of your life.
6.Tell someone else's story.
7.Write a letter to your kids (or your younger self).
8.Make a list.
9.Teach something.
10.Write about writing.
11.Persuade me.
12.Lie.
13.Tell us about your day.
14.Write about food.
15.Evaluate.
16.Give hope.
17.Pick a fight.
18.Write about waiting.
19.Write in someone else's voice.
20.Write about justice.
21.Write a confession.
22.Write about fear.
23.Write the end.
24.Cut the fluff.
25.Write about travel.
26.Write about disappointment.
27.Write about work.
28.Give your own eulogy.
29.Write what you know.
30.Write about innocence.
31.Write about finishing.
The reason why I signed up to this site is to learn a new behavior of writing everyday. One of the key things that attracted me to the site was the easy, clear manner in which the author wrote his blogs. That is how I would like to write, attracting people to my website.
So my number of words for my first day = 529 (not bad at all!) :)

Great start. I have always thought that free thought writing for an hour a day to be a good exercise.
Thanks.
I'm not disciplined when it comes to regular exercising. Since my discovery of WA I have become even worse! I have to force myself to get up and away from my computer. I'm enjoying the learning SO MUCH!
I learn and apply at least on new thing everyday!
Maybe this writing discipline will encourage me to become more disciplined doing regular exercises too! :)
