Choosing a niche and domain name. Adding a layer and changing Site Title later.

Hello All -

Walking through the training step by step with zero knowledge at start, I followed Kyle's advice and chose a narrow niche: semi-precious gemstones. Well, I thought that eventually I'll get to the plural, but I'll start targeting even narrower niche - malachite lovers.

I thought that when I accomplished more learning and my first niche content looked well fulfilled, I'd move on and start working on another niche, and then another one. This seems like a common practice here, and many people in WA run several websites focusing on different niches. I started thinking about what else I am interested in... wood artworks, glass artworks, ceramic artworks, hand-painted silk artworks, mixed-media art, embroidery, photography, music, dance...

Do you see where I am going with this? Yes, I am interested in applied arts. Yes, the concept is too broad for one niche, but... as I move forward, I don't want every niche to have its own domain, and I don't want to manage multiple websites, because these niches well over-cross. Eventually, I'd like to have one website, which will help artisans and art lovers. Luckily, I thought about this before selecting a domain name for my site. Therefore, I chose the name tied to arts rather than directly to gemstones.

I am sure that some beginner artists may want to do some research on what's involved in blowing a glass vase versus making a ceramic one, or versus carving a wooden one. I'd like to offer them such information all in one place. Art-lovers visiting my site, may also enjoy looking at a variety of materials and products across the niches. If I am to write all this content, I better keep it all in one place!

This is the architecture I'd like to build:

And... here comes my problem! At this moment, the structure of the website I started is: Semi-Precious Gemstones (Home page with blogs) -> malachite, amber, charoite, rhodonite, jasper, agate, [other], About Me, Privacy Policy (static pages). The new architecture I envision, adds a layer to what's proposed in the training. This means that at some point, I would need to change my site's title and menus. Pages will move one step down as it's shown in the schema above.

  • Could someone please tell me the kind of problems I am running myself into, especially with changing the Site's Title later on and moving pages? Will Google have to re-discover/re-index my site? Will I have to change all my affiliate links and AdSense since pages they are on have changed their URLs (relatively, but still)? What else can give me trouble?
  • Do you think I should make this change rather sooner than later?
  • Can you suggest WP theme, which should best handle this scenario?

Thank you!

~ Julia

Subdomains to the rescue when wrestling with Niche taxonomy Jewelia!

Hi Michael,

Thank you very much. Could you please recommend a good reading/ learning material on subdomains?
Best,
Julia

Here is WP authority for a good description Jewelia! https://wpsites.net/wordpress-tips/what-is-a-subdomain-how-to-create-sub-domains/

I appreciate your pointer to the right direction! Thanks a lot reading my post and helping out, Michael!

Better to start with one niche first. It looks like you got it narrowed pretty good. Build from there first and see how things go.
