Keep training, fix up your site later!

I've noticed many new users asking some valid questions on Wealthy Affiliate, and I have many myself. However, there is a trend that has become clear: Most of these questions are covered in the basic training!!

In fact, the tendency among new users (myself included) is to get everything perfect right away. The reality is that your site will never be perfect and won't even get close if you haven't completed the initial courses. There is no use going on to advanced training sessions or asking questions about advanced techniques when it will all become clear within a few more lessons.

The most difficult thing about this, for me at least, is when I do a new lesson, only to discover I have done things the wrong way so far! So how do you deal with this? I want to keep up on the training, but I also feel this urge to go back and fix everything, and start asking questions!

Here is my solution:

I don't fix it. At the end of the basic training courses I am going to stop writing content for a week or two while I go back over my site and fix everything up, page by page, post by post.

How I will know what needs fixing:

A very simple technique, actually! Each time I read a training session or someone's update explaining a "best approach," I give it a star for follow up later.

See the small white star? Click it and you will be asked to set a tag:

Using this approach, once I finish the training in 3 more lessons, I have a tagged group of posts to read as I go through my whole site and fix it to the point I am happy with!

Neat, right?

Please leave a comment if you have other suggestions or ideas on fixing your site vs progressing through the training.

Cheers,

Jesse

Great Advice, found myself going back and spending too much time on site fixing and not moving on. Like your idea and continuing on in my training. Thanks for the re-focus

Me too Bob!

Valid observation Jesse. I've got a post, and a review to write. Then on to the next lesson. Thanks. Geoff

Hi Geoff, thanks for the comment! I've got a post to write and then on to Course 5, lesson 9! Wow!

Excellent tip, Jesse. This will by my new mantra :-)

Thanks James! I've had to do this because I kept finding myself being distracted by 'tweaking' my website every two lessons as I learned more - it was getting unproductive!

Thanks for the tip JessHop.

Hi Orm, thanks for the comment. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me!

Good advice. I accidentally did sumthin 2 my website wen I was trying to figure out how to update my DNS. I'm sticking on level 2 lesson 1.

Did your website totally disappear? That might be something that needs fixing more urgently...
Kyle's Namecheap training is outdated now, try this one if you are stuck:

Thanks Jess.

Absolutely

It's always good to balance the two of fixing your posts and going through the training.

Exactly - I am putting a plan in place of fixing everything up AFTER the training :)

Great advice, I wasn't quite sure what the white star's meaning was.
Great game plan, I am guilty of doing exactly what you said from time to time, FINISH THE TRAINING FIRST,, we all know how easily we get answers to our questions, When we have valid ones not covered in all of our courses.

Thanks Jesse,

Hope it helps!

Jess, thanks for the post! I really needed it! I will keep the balance and it will all work out in the end. I must pace myself and I am now going to check out those stars and back to the training.
Thank you for supporting our journey forward. Have the best day Ever each day!

Glad to help Lizat!

I do struggle to keep moving on the training. People keep giving out good suggestions.
I usually tweak my websites at weekends. But writing content always comes first. So yeah... keeping the balance is the formula for me.

It's a good approach - but I'm trying to keep weekends for my fiancee :)
