The SEO info here applies with or without a plugin.
It is a platform. I've had to handcode some modifications to the site in order to get some things to work as desired.

Have you found an answer so far? It's hard for me to say because I started out with WordPress years ago and saw it ranked many times.
The only other platform I've used was Blogger.com and I know that many used to rank with that one even though they seem to have SEO plugins.
I guess they were still kinda targeting keywords for their posts and optimizing it the best they could. And since Blogger.com is own by Google (like YouTube) then I guess it might help a little.
I don't know.
I think the link that @chrisbailey mentioned will be a good starting point for me to double check the checklist against my site. I'll update this post if I find something else that is helpful.
