The Moment Everything Shifted — And Why WA Was the Missing Piece

Every once in a while, I take a step back and ask myself a simple question:

“What would my life look like if I had never found Wealthy Affiliate?”

It’s strange to think about, because I honestly don’t remember how I even landed here. I wasn’t searching for “affiliate training,” and I didn’t even know this world existed. I was just trying to keep my family afloat, learn a bit of marketing, and claw my way out of the financial hole we were in.

But looking back now…
If I hadn’t stumbled into WA when I did, I genuinely don’t know where I’d be.

Where My Journey Started (2021)

Before WA entered the picture, I joined an MLM company. And to be fair—I enjoyed it.
The product was legit. The training was motivating.

And I can still hear my mentor’s voice:
“It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”

I still use the product today.
I just couldn’t stay in the MLM model.

I spent an entire year learning marketing—not online business, just the fundamentals:

  • Storytelling
  • Customer service
  • People skills
  • Building rapport

But the reality was this:

Nobody was buying.
And motivation alone wasn’t putting food on the table.

That part stung.

The Strange Twist That Led Me Here

In 2022, during that “something has to change” season of life, I bumped into MLSP (their brand has changed since). One FB Live training from a woman on their team said something that hit me straight in the chest:

“Marketing is like dating. Push too soon, and you’re proposing before the first date.”

That line stuck with me hard.

Around that same time, I randomly read a Wealthy Affiliate success story. Didn’t sign up. Didn’t even bookmark the page. But it planted a seed.

Eventually, that seed turned into curiosity.
Then curiosity turned into a Starter account.
Then the first-week lessons happened…

And I said, “Screw it.”

I borrowed my mom’s credit card, joined during the 2022 Black Friday sale, and figured I’d sort the money part out later. Months down the road, I paid her back with whatever I could scrape together.

And here we are.
The shift had already happened. I just didn’t know it yet.

What I Learned the Hard Way

I spent the first three years sprinting through lessons way too fast.

Five websites.
Endless content.
Tons of excitement…
And very little patience.

Even though I knew this wasn’t a get-rich-quick model, I still acted like I could outrun the process.

I tried to beat Google.
I tried to outwork results.
I tried to force success at the pace I wanted.

But the truth?

Success is slow.
Slow is steady.
Steady is sustainable.

It took burning myself out in Costa Rica last year to finally understand that.
The “Pura Vida” mindset finally clicked—both in life and in business.

And yes, the financial struggles still show up now and then. But I know the direction I’m headed. I know why I’m doing this. And I know I’m building something that actually aligns with who I am.

If I Never Found WA…

I wouldn’t have five brands.
I wouldn’t have the creativity I have today (thanks, Image Studio).
I wouldn’t understand SEO, business systems, AI tools, or this entire online world.
I wouldn’t be living this life—one built on purpose instead of punching through the grind.

So here’s my gratitude:

Thank you, Kyle.
Thank you, Carson.
Thank you, Jeff (still not sure how I ended up joining under you).
Thank you to Jay, Eric, Vitaliy, and every member whose training or comment pushed me forward.
Thank you to everyone I’ve met on the inside.

You’ve all shaped my journey in ways you may never fully realize.

Now… A Question for the WA Veterans

This next part isn’t about me.

It’s a call-out to every “guru,” every long-timer, every member who’s been here 2+ years, grinding, learning, teaching, succeeding, failing, and standing back up again.

I want to hear your story:

  • Where would you be if you never found WA?
  • What did you learn the hard way?
  • What mistakes would you warn beginners about?
  • What advice would you send back to your first-month self?
  • And if you left WA today… what skill, mindset, or lesson would you carry with you forever?

Whether you’re earning six figures or still building your first commission—your story matters. Someone in this community needs to hear it.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this:

We don’t level up by shouting our wins.
We level up by sharing the road that got us there.

Sorry if I don't answer all of the questions.. :-)

I joined WA simply for the hosting. I was paying $75 a month on another platform for 2 websites. Joining WA was $49. I was already saving $26 a month.

Via Word of Mouth in my first month, I had my 1st Premium Referral who is still here today. :-)

So today, WA costs me nothing. More than anything the WA Community is the most important thing for me over anything else.

Book/ebook publishing remains my main source of income.

I'm sure I'll enjoy reading all the other comments to this post. Thanks Jeremy!

Oh my, trying to remember exactly how I came to know WA. It was random. I was checking another marketing platform because I use to do “microworks” on microworkers website. And while “working” I read a message about WA somehow!! I don’t remember clearly 🤣😅 and i checked WA platform. 🙏🤗

All too familiar.

Your story is so familiar-We are here because we want to do something specific!
And for some, we don't know for sure what the thing is, so we have to check out some stops along the way. However, I learned more with each stop.

Sometimes I learned that I did not want to continue with the business I built.
But the blessing is I can start over. All paths are not straight.

So true. And funny you mention this. One of the websites I started with (a nature based website), quickly turned into a "travel-nature" hybrid last year... THis year I full on swapped it to a TOUR website.

Hey, Jeremy.

Where would you be if you never found WA?- I would be right where I am, just not working as diligently on my books or brand or anything substantial.

What did you learn the hard way?- I am not sure I have learned a hard lesson like you mean, yet. But I am sure I will find it one day.

What mistakes would you warn beginners about? Start with an Easy Website Theme to build. Especially if you are Tech-Challenged like me. Learn how to get your website up, running, etc. Before you try a different theme, add a new website, or anything else.

What advice would you send back to your first-month self?- DON'T PROCRASTINATE! 😏😏😏

And if you left WA today… what skill, mindset, or lesson would you carry with you forever? I don't know. I don't see myself ever leaving WA.

You are right, Jeremy.

Ah... great share, and oh so true!

As for your questions...

Where would you be if you never found WA?
Still buffering in doubt.
Wandering without clear architecture.

What did you learn the hard way?
That motion ≠ progress.
Not all clicks are conversions.

What mistakes would you warn beginners about?
Don’t chase algorithms.
Chase understanding.
Don’t publish noise.

What advice would you send back to your first-month self?
Learn the craft, not just the hacks.
Build roots before reach.
STICK TO ONE WEBSITE

And if you left WA today… what skill, mindset, or lesson would you carry with you forever?
The art of compounding.
Small, daily syntax builds empires of meaning.

And... i,would miss the WAmily
