Sometimes Quitting Is the Smartest Business Decision You'll Make

A couple days ago, I made a business decision that came with mixed emotions.
I cancelled my Shopify store.
If you've ever built something from scratch, you'll understand why that wasn't an easy decision.
The store wasn't some disaster, it wasn't getting chargebacks every week or was it costing me thousands of dollars. In fact, part of me still believes it could have become successful if I had continued to invest the time and energy into it.
That's what made the decision difficult.
I wasn't walking away from a proven failure, I was walking away from a possibility.
Looking Back At The Numbers
I launched my Shopify store for my RV website, back in October of 2023.
Over its lifetime, the store generated seven orders. Yup, you read that right.... 7! Not 70, not 700...but 7! Spelled SEVEN.
Some were test purchases, some were refunded due to high fraudulent attempts, and a few were legitimate customer sales.
Was it enough to justify keeping the store alive?
That's a big resounding HECK NO.
You see, when I zoomed out and looked at the bigger picture, I started to notice that the store was costing me approximately $51 USD per month once subscriptions and apps were included.
Now that may not sound like much, but over a year, that's over $600 USD, and over two years, that's over $1,200 USD. Yes, i can do math!
That still didn't include the time spent maintaining products, updating listings, checking settings, troubleshooting issues, and keeping everything running. Not to mention, hiring a couple of Fiverr guru's to try and revive the store by giving it a makeover, and adding products, descriptions, and better SEO back end updates.
Basically, the real cost wasn't just money anymore, it was attention. Attention I started to run out of, and didn't give Shopify anymore.

The Hidden Cost Of Every Project
One lesson I've learned over the years being inside Wealthy Affiliate is that every project wants a piece of you.
What I mean is:
- A website wants content
- A YouTube channel wants videos.
- A social media page wants posts.
- A Shopify store wants products, promotions, and customer support.
None of these things are bad, but the problem comes when you have too many of them competing for your attention. Which, I think is safe to say, they all have been!
Over the past few years, I've built multiple websites and online projects. Some are gaining traction. Some are still in development. Some have tremendous potential.
But this Shopify store became one more thing on my plate.
Eventually I had to ask myself a simple question:
"Where is my time best invested?"
The Vision Is Still There
I don't think this is a case of giving up, because I don't believe in the idea.
I can still see the vision. I can also still imagine the store growing.
But could I picture future sales? Not really. Because I've learned something important about business.
Potential is not the same as priority.
Just because something could succeed doesn't mean it deserves your focus right now. Especially when I have no traffic coming into the particular store.
I think that's a lesson many entrepreneurs struggle with...We're naturally optimistic people, and we see opportunities everywhere. We see possibilities where other people see obstacles.
But sometimes our greatest strength becomes our greatest weakness.
We keep everything alive because we don't want to let go of what it might become.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, I feel there is a difference between quitting because something is hard and letting something go because it no longer serves your larger goals.
That's what this Shopify store taught me. And I don't regret building it one bit, nor do I regret trying.
And I certainly don't view it as a failure.
In fact I hope many of you remember the lessons it taught me, including How I Built A Full Print-on-Demand Product Using Printify + Shopify + WA Image Studio
In many ways, it was another stepping stone on the journey.
But every entrepreneur eventually reaches a point where they need to make difficult decisions.
And sometimes, quitting is the smartest business decision you'll make.
