I Paid $400 for Ads and Got Nothing. Here’s Why That Was the Best Thing I Ever Did.
Let’s not sugarcoat it.
I spent $400 on an ad campaign that didn’t convert.
Zero bookings. No cash flow. Just... clicks.
Now before you shake your head or throw me into the “you-should’ve-known-better” pile, hear me out — because this is the best damn marketing lesson I’ve had in the last 12 months.
And guess what?
It didn’t cost me a dime out of my own pocket.
So What Happened? The ad was for FlyFishCR.com — a beautiful, off-the-grid fly fishing retreat in Costa Rica. The kind of experience that sells itself once someone walks on the property.
But we weren’t getting walk-ins. We needed web traffic.
So, with some flexibility from the owner (who agreed to test some paid traffic), I pulled the trigger through GoDaddy’s built-in setup, which led to a Google Ads campaign. Seemed straightforward. I’d dabbled before but never with this much budget behind it.
The results?
- Over 30,000 impressions
- 5,000 new visitors
- 1,000 Google Maps clicks
- 2 phone calls
- 2 direct messages
- 0 actual bookings
On paper? It looked like traffic success.
In reality? The cash register didn’t budge.
Here’s Why It Didn’t HurtFirst — I wasn’t playing with my own money. That’s key. If this had been from my own pocket, you’d better believe I’d be singing a different tune.
But since it was a collaborative experiment, I got to see what $400 actually buys you in the world of pay-per-click.
And the takeaway?
Clicks don’t mean squat if your offer isn’t ready, if your trust signals aren’t strong, or if you’re not crystal clear about your customer's buying intent.
People don’t just drop $700 on a guided fly fishing trip because a Google ad said “click here.”
They need more. They need you. They need the brand, the story, the why.
Would I Do It Again? Not in the same way.
And certainly not if I was still clawing for commissions.
Paid ads have a place — but only after your funnel is tight, your offer is converting organically, and your audience is already nodding along before they even land on the booking form.
So no, I wouldn’t rewind the clock.
Because I didn’t just run an ad. I ran a case study.
I got to see firsthand what PPC can and can’t do for a small tourism brand in its first year of operations.
WA Members — This Is Where It Gets RealIf you’re new here and thinking about launching ads before your content’s even ranking, before your first sale... please pause.
Use the tools WA gives you. Learn to write for people. Test headlines. Refine your offer.
Get one blog post to convert.
Get one YouTube video to earn a click.
Then... maybe start experimenting with traffic that costs money.
But until then, use time instead of dollars.
I say this from experience — and from someone who’s been lucky enough to burn someone else’s budget while learning the hard lessons.
Final Thoughts: Why the Burn Was Worth ItFlyFishCR didn’t get bookings. But it got brand awareness.
I didn’t make a commission. But I got confidence.
And next time I do it — whether for myself or a client — I’ll know exactly what to tweak, what to track, and what’s a total waste of time.
Sometimes, the best ROI isn’t in the bank. It’s in your brain.
You either buy your lessons... or you build them.
I got to do both.

Thanks for sharing that important message. Everyone is eager for success and accelerating or jumping ahead "appears" to be the right thing to do, however, it is not. I am guilty of doing that in my first year at WA and now in my second I have slowed down and reverted back to the training. Thanks @JDenesovych for the excellent post and lesson.
Hi Jeremy!
A great learning experience for you! Thanks for sharing so that other can learn from your experience! Keep doing what you need to do until you get it right!
Have a great Sunday! Wishing you the very best!
Kind regards,
Nichola
Sounds like you learnt a lot from this, Jeremy. Keep up the learning and the money will follow.
Great post. The sales funnel is a challenging concept. And even harder to build. But with the right mindset, patience and tools, you can get there

Thank you for this important lesson. All new members need to know that it is very crucial to get your content right so that one can build confidence and trust with audience. And that does not happen over night. The money will come but one step at time in WA training is the way to go. Thank you for this real life lesson.
