From MLM Flashbacks to Affiliate Comebacks: How I Unlocked My Inner Website Nerd
Let’s rewind the clock.
It was 2019. I was still knee-deep in the world of MLMs—business cards in one hand, a “Come to the Opportunity Meeting” smile plastered on my face, and a dream bigger than my gas tank.
Now don’t get me wrong. MLM taught me a lot. I learned about people. I learned about rejection. I learned how to pitch something I didn’t fully understand with enthusiasm I barely believed in.
But the real magic didn’t start until that chapter closed... and something completely unexpected opened.
I found website building. And man… it brought back a version of me I hadn’t seen in a long time.
When You Realize You Actually Like This Stuff
You see, back in high school, I never thought of myself as the “techy” guy. I wasn’t the kid fixing computers or designing MySpace layouts. (Okay, maybe one MySpace layout. But that was mostly for the music.)
Fast forward to my first crack at WordPress through Wealthy Affiliate, and suddenly the creativity floodgates opened.
Choosing colors, laying out sections, tweaking navigation menus like I was crafting a digital RV—every bit of it made sense to me.
My wife would look over and say, “You’ve been on that laptop for six hours.”
And I’d respond with:
“Yeah… but come look at this new dropdown menu I built!”
(Spoiler: she was mildly impressed.)
What MLM Taught Me That WordPress Rewarded
Here’s the twist: everything I hated about pitching in MLM… was gone.
There were no awkward meetings. No cold calls. No late-night “Hey girl, I’ve got an opportunity for you!” Facebook messages.
Instead, I had the freedom to build something on my own terms—something that lived online, worked while I slept, and didn’t make me feel like I was selling my soul at every turn.
That’s when I realized… building websites was like building a campfire:
It takes a little prep, the right spark, and some TLC—but once it gets going, it can burn all night.
The Part That Made It Stick
Want to know the moment I knew I was hooked?
When someone found one of my blog posts—one I wrote just because I had something to say—and left a comment saying,
“This helped me so much. I’ve been looking for this exact answer.”
Boom. Hooked.
I don’t care if that post made a dime (though some of them did). That connection? That impact?
That’s what MLM never gave me.
Midpoint Gut Check: Still Think You Hate Tech?
I get it—maybe you think “building a website” is intimidating. Maybe you’re thinking,
“I’m not creative like that.”
But I promise you… this stuff becomes second nature the more you play with it.
Heck, the first RV I bought intimidated me too. Now I can level it blindfolded with one foot on the brake and a taco in hand.
Same principle.
How WA Made It All Possible
Now here’s the real kicker: none of this would’ve happened without Wealthy Affiliate.
Seriously. The only reason I knew how to build a site was because the platform handed me everything I needed.
Step-by-step lessons, live training, helpful members, and that sweet combo of WordPress + Hosting that makes this entire machine run like a dream.
(Well… a dream where you still have to work your butt off. But a dream nonetheless.)
Final Thoughts: The Comeback Was the Best Part
If you’re just starting out—or maybe you’re still stuck in the tail-end of an MLM gig—take this as your sign.
Affiliate marketing, blogging, website building… it’s all here waiting for you. And unlike MLM, your success doesn’t depend on pressuring your Aunt Brenda to buy overpriced shakes.
It depends on you, your creativity, and your willingness to keep showing up.
And who knows? Maybe you’ve got an inner website nerd too…
Just waiting for the right spark.

I’m hearing ya!
This marketing stuff is like a combination lock. Once you know the first and second digits, the third will fall in place.
I’ve attempted to open a lot of these marketing combination locks. Some open and some don’t.
Some change.
Just gotta keep on trying.👍

Hi Jeremy!
This brings back my memories of being in Amway in the 1980s! It was my first step into entrepreneurship: being in charge of my own destiny.
I did okay, but convincing people that they could build a million-dollar business or whatever income level they wanted for $ $100 made it too easy for them to give up. They were not me: no big dreams.
The best thing I got out of MLM was being introduced to people like Zig Ziglar, one of the mentors that led to my future business successes.
So, I always look fondly on those years, but I know where you are coming from. It takes a lot of patience to grow a large MLM organization. If you can find the right people, it is a good business model.
The business model is one thing, the product is the other. If you're passionate about what you're offering people, it just makes sense!
Agreed! I love essential oils, so I have been with two companies that offer awesome products! Belief in the offerings is definitely necessary.
