Be Creative, Not Reactive (Why Most Online Businesses Stall Before They Start)
Last night I watched a vlog titled Be Creative, Not Reactive and it landed in that uncomfortable but useful way. Not dramatic, not flashy, just one of those moments where you quietly sit back and realize how often you confuse motion with progress.
The main idea was simple. There’s a fine line between reacting to life and actually creating it.
One quote made me laugh because of how accurate it felt: creative and reactive look almost identical, just one letter swapped. Yet the outcomes couldn’t be further apart. Reactive is fast. Creative is slow. Reactive feels productive. Creative actually builds something.
If you’ve been building an online business inside Wealthy Affiliate for any amount of time, you already know this pattern. It’s easy to stay busy. It’s harder to stay intentional.
One line from the video that stuck with me was, “Business isn’t the same as progress.” That hit home because so many of us fill our days with activity and then wonder why nothing meaningful seems to move forward. We answer comments, scroll feeds, tweak designs, watch training after training, jump between tools, and somehow still end the day feeling behind.
A lot of us are addicted to being busy. We pack our schedules with tasks and feel guilty when we slow down, even though slowing down is often where clarity shows up. The video described reactivity as an illusion of movement, and that’s exactly what it feels like. You’re moving, but you’re not really going anywhere.
Another point that stood out was the difference between control and choice. Reactivity is driven by external forces. Algorithms, notifications, comparison, trends, platform updates. Creativity, on the other hand, is about choice. Choosing to sit down and write your article when nobody is clapping yet. Choosing to build your funnel slowly instead of chasing every shiny tactic. Choosing consistency over urgency.
Inside WA, the people who win long-term usually aren’t the fastest or the loudest. They’re the ones who keep creating when it’s boring, when it’s quiet, and when results haven’t shown up yet.
The video asked a simple question that’s worth sitting with: “Am I living with purpose, or running around in circles?” Online business makes this painfully obvious. You’ll recognize reactive mode when you constantly restart projects instead of finishing them, change niches every month, consume more training than you apply, or delay publishing because everything has to be perfect.
Creative work doesn’t look exciting from the outside. It’s writing when you don’t feel inspired. Publishing when it’s not flawless. Showing up on slow days. That’s where momentum actually comes from.
Social media was another big point. It has become the biggest amplifier of reactivity. Endless dopamine loops from likes, comments, and scrolling. We’ve all been there. But the important part is that it isn’t inherently bad. It’s a tool. Used unconsciously, it keeps you distracted. Used intentionally, it becomes leverage.
Inside WA, this is the difference between endlessly scrolling Facebook groups versus posting value, testing ads, building audiences, and using platforms with purpose. Same tools. Completely different outcomes.
The vlog also touched on something deeper. Creativity isn’t just about art or innovation. It’s about being in flow and alignment with what you’re building. When you create instead of react, the quality of your work changes. Your writing improves. Your ideas connect better. Your patience grows. You stop forcing outcomes and start building systems.
And that’s exactly what affiliate marketing rewards. Not "hype" as AI would write, not rush or even shortcuts. Just steady, consistent creation.
Since it’s Saturday, here’s your friendly reality check with a little humor. If your “workday” looks like coffee, scroll, check stats, scroll, watch training, scroll, rearrange your homepage header, scroll… congratulations. You were very busy. You just didn’t create much.
Try this instead. Pick one task that actually moves your business forward. Finish it. Publish it. Then step away. That’s creative energy in action.
Reactive energy keeps you stuck in loops. Creative energy builds assets.
Wealthy Affiliate gives us the tools, the training, the community, and the infrastructure. What we do with that environment is the real difference. So the next time you sit down to work, ask yourself honestly: am I feeding the scroll, or am I building something that compounds?
That question alone can shift the direction of your entire business.

Wow, this is so true! 👏
It’s easy to confuse busyness with progress. The key is choosing one task that actually moves your business forward and finishing it. Great reminder!
Choose a task that genuinely propels your business forward.
Complete it, publish it, and then step back. Be intentional.
That’s creative energy in action.
How true 🚀
It is harder to stay intention. You can be busy for weeks on end, but without that "intent" element, what you are working on may be done in vain. Whereas something intention done for an hour could replace and be more valuable to your business than unintentional work for an entire week.
Lots of great insights here, and based on my personal experience they are all very true!
There are many great points here, and a good read, Jeremy. "It’s easy to stay busy. It’s harder to stay intentional." rings true and loud.

This hit home in the best way. Busy doesn’t equal progress, and creative work rarely looks exciting from the outside.
Thanks for the nudge to stop reacting and start creating
