I want to start running, Where do I begin?

For some people just to starting Running is a mind blowing experience and that puts them off starting their new journey. So I have put together some tips on how to start running. This will cover the basic’s for you to break the ice in running.

Walking

Its all about learning some basic techniques to help us prevent injury and make the most of our running. Lets start walking.(What this website is all about running not walking.)You have properly heard the saying you need to learn to walk before you can run, that’s quite right. If you can’t run constantly try a mixture of running and walking or if you run out of steam just walk. This will help build your body to cope with the challenges of running.

Injury free

The Goal at this stage for everyone should be running with out getting injured this is why we are taking things slow to start then building up. Learn to listen what your body is telling you. The number one reason for people not wanting to run any more is injury. If you are feeling aches and pains and wanting to go out for a run DON’T have some more rest until your body is 100% ache and pain free If these problems still persist please go see your doctor or a physiotherapist.

Running shoes

Get some proper running shoes just because they cost a lot a money does not mean they are they are the best, on the flip side tho don’t do for the cheapest pair you can find either. When you a looking for a new pair of running shoes the main thing you should consider is comfort. Don’t be afraid to try on as many running shoes as necessary to find the perfect pair for your foot shape. Just to let you know though it my take a while for you to find your perfect pair of running shes because trying them on is different to actually going out running in them.

Form

Running form is anther area that we need to consider this will help your body get the best out of your runs and help prevent injury. The hardest thing when it comes to keeping good form on you runs is when tiredness kicks in, then your form starts to change.

The best area to start with when looking at your form is your posture. Here are three things to consider when thinking about posture out on your runs.

  1. Run tall
  2. Keep your head up and look forwards
  3. Hold your hips high picture yourself running over the ground rather than in to it.

Learning

Running to get fit vs getting fit to run? In my eyes running is a journey and to get better to succeed at any thing we do in life not just running, we need to get better so if you find areas of you running that you know you need work on learn about them, research and master the skill. You could start with Pilates or yoga to help you build body strengh. If we are not constantly learning how to get better at what we do we are just running to get fit. This will not only help enjoy running for years to come but assist you in staying injury free.

Great article! Can you explain breathing techniques? I've heard to do a yoga type breathing technique. Are there multiple ways? And in your opinion, which creates a better running experience...running until your tired and then walking or running for 4 minutes, walking for 1 minute and repeating or other variable?
