For some reason I can only do one or the other
It depends on your WordPress theme. Some themes allow that type of function, but if I were you I'd stick with recent posts and pin one that serves the function as being just a description to the top of the page; which can be done on many if not most themes.

Okay I had to double check, but here's what you can do to solve your problem...
1. Get into your WordPress Dashboard and go to Appearances - Themes - Add New
2. Use the filter feature and select "Sticky Posts".
It will filter out themes that don't have the feature of allowing you to have a Post page for a homepage AND the ability to select one that will always be on top.

I was actually curious how he embedded the products to look the way they did from the drop down.
I can't figure that out.

It says the theme can't be found for some reason. Hopefully the website creator ill get back to me. I asked him directly but I know he probably gets a ton of messages.
