Aim to produce the best content for a specific niche, share it on social media, and back links will naturally start to form.
Google is most focused on user engagement, they want to provide the best information for people who use their search engine so they will keep using their search engine. Therefore, the smartest approach to building a website is to focus primarily on the content because while Google's algorithm keeps changing, it's ALWAYS going to be focused on providing the best information to its customers so you need to have that mindset as well.
You're not writing for search engines, you're writing for people.
Having said that, back links are still important but you have to have the right idea: it's not about how many back links you have but instead the QUALITY of the back links. If you get a link from, say, Huffington Post, your website will receive a massive up vote that Google will recognize because Huffington Post is a huge authority website.
Also, if you have a cake blog and you get a link from another cake blog that is authoritative, Google will recognize this as a relevancy up vote. Relevancy is massively important as well when building back links.
I don't recommend using any sort of system that advertises being able to build back links on autopilot or something like that as most these back links are really crappy and could potentially cause Google to penalize and manually remove your site from its search results.
Here are a couple sites to look at for back link strategies:

Just keep producing awesome content and share it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc., comment on other blogs, etc. Slowly learn more about back links, email marketing, conversions, PPC, etc. as you take each day at a time, but ultimately EVERYTHING goes back to that simple principle: Awesome content + sharing it with others.
