After publishing content regularly, I asked my wife's opinion as to how the aesthetics of my site were. She said that I should add images to my blog roll, so I completely changed my theme and managed to get my site exactly the way I wanted it to look.
It didn't take long for me to do it either. I should have done it earlier but I wanted to focus on creating content and engaging the reader. Now, I think the reader will be even more engaged because my site is more pleasing to the eye. My wife can't get over how professional it looks and she shows people at her work what I had created.
So, I guess my advice would be to start off with a simple theme and start creating content so you can get rankings. Then, get comments through our comment exchange program. Lastly, you should worry about how your site looks.
