Hi all, I'm hoping someone can give me a little info here!

I was hit in Google search results with the Jan 202 Core Update, and have recently regained my steady traffic

Awesome stuff, James!

Hi James,

It's great that your traffic has increased like that, but do please keep in mind that these are very unusual times..!

I hate to dampen your spirits, but the reality is that across the web the search rankings, certainly on Google, have been extremely volatile over the past 6 weeks.

The search engines are all trying to get their heads around completely new search behaviour from Internet users. They're also trying to work out what Covid/Coronavirus related keywords relate to other keywords and how those relate to existing search queries, and so on - and they haven't caught up.

My own search traffic has been up and down like a yo yo, day to day.

So my suggestion is to keep your head down, take the successes you're getting, but don't get despondent if your search traffic suddenly falls away again.

Just keep doing what you're doing, because you're obviously doing it right..!

Cheers,

Martin.

If you have Google Analytics or Clicky set up you should be able to track your entrance points. If it's Google, Yahoo, or Bing, then it's probably SEO paying off. I looked at your site and i see it features recipes and healthy meals. That's a popular topic right now with everyone being stuck at home.

Also, it looks like you had some great improvement in rankings. Based on ubersugest, you have 3 keywords ranking in the 1-3 position, but a whopping 43 in the 4-10 position! In other words, it looks like your keywords are trending up.

Wow. I check analytics and UberSuggest, but didn't realise things were trending that positively! 😂 I do focus on improving my old articles and out competing competitors, which likely helps with the keywords.

Thank you for doing some research into this for me George, I really appreciate it. I'm hopeful that this is SEO improvements and efforts paying off after starting me website nearly a year ago now, but I suppose I'll wait and see!

In a few days I'll update this with any more progress or updates to help everyone (and myself) understand. :)

Thanks again!

James

Wow, I don't know the answer but am curious. Hope someone else knows because I'd love to know as well. Congrats though! That's good news.

Oh how I'm curious, too! 😅 As I said above, I'll come back here in a few days and let everyone know what's going on (as much as I can).

Thank you!

James

Hey James,

Google is honouring posts where we are sharing our own person health experiences. But for advice given with no mention of us suffering and having found a certain treatment worked, those posts are as good as dead now when it comes to organic search results... but... can still be shared on social media.

Hope you find this helpful.

Please remove your PS and put that link in your Follow me on section of your profile. Here's how: This way you are not breaking the WA rules by spamming members.

Hi there, thank you very much for your response. What you said does make sense, I have now updated my post to mention that for any claims I cannot personally attest to, I do thoroughly research and link to to studies or articles backing the information.

Also thanks for the link guidelines :)

Sorry for the long ramble... you hit on one of the few things that really annoys me. Lol

I have a couple of fitness sites and have plastered notices all around about being normal person, not a doctor, lawyer, etc... if a person is looking for that kind of thing then sorry this isn't for you.

My sites are young and haven't been updated for many weeks now but they are starting to get a bit of traffic and look like they will eventually rank well for their key phrases. But again I put a LOT of focus on making these sites come across as clearly being by "just a normal non-professional-in-the-industry person" so maybe Google's algo can actually determine that.

---

Although I completely understand that people handing out healthcare advice could be a very dangerous thing... definitely get that... at the same time I do not believe in censorship.

I don't see how you or anyone simply sharing your own personal experience, meal recipes, etc is a bad thing.

I already miss seeing information that used to commonly appear in search results.

Do we really want an online world where only licensed experts can share their opinions and views? Maybe that is what people want. I don't want that.

That is very boring and if I wanted that I would simply search for "official" stuff to begin with or heck just make an appointment with a doctor.

To me the whole value of the Internet is for people to be able to share their personal experiences and views. The day when all views are suppressed except for one school of thought.... formal / official / licensed etc is the day I think the Internet will be fairly dull.

I don't want to know what pills doctors think I should be taking. I want to know what Joe is doing with food and exercise. And so forth.

BUT... at the same time... the problem is two-fold I think.

First... because of the money earning potential many people write anything and everything just to make money. They write about things they have no experience in. I think this is what Google is trying to get rid of. This whole reputation thing, validated authority thing... seems pretty obvious this is to get rid of sites where people are just writing about things they have no clue of, copying bits and pieces from around the net or hiring writers to do the same.

It is hard to do that but over time they will likely try to suppress those more I guess.

The other thing is litigation. We live in a world where people love to complain, love to cause problems and we end up with frivolous and ridiculous lawsuits as a result.

Where it should be very simple... if *I* visit a site and *I* read an article and *I* decide to apply what *I* read or what *I* interpreted from what *I* read and as a result of *MY" choices and actions *I* caused harm to *MYSELF* it doesn't make any sense for me to sue the author of the article.

But this happens these days. Because personal responsibility has become pretty meaningless in the legal system. Oh it is there for one side but not equally for both sides.

Anyway so that is something Google etc are probably leary of as well. Someone may well sue them for bringing such sites back in their results.

I know this all doesn't help much. I would say plaster notices all over your site... make it 100% clear that people should seek a doctor / healthcare professional / certified nutritionist etc and this is your personal experience and views you are sharing and that you are not responsible for anything that happens to another person reading and applying your information.

This way there can be no confusion and you should reach your target audience... grownup mature people who take responsibility for their own actions and are simply wanting to find information from another human being who is an "average" person just like them.

There is value in that. And, in my opinion, if it is your passion then you should be able to do that. And maybe you can rely more on YT, FB, Pinterest, etc to reach people and to heck with Google.

Wow, you wrote such a detailed response! I really appreciate that you took the time to give your insight and opinion on this matter, it's definitely very helpful.

I do think you are right that I should make it more clear on my website that I am not a certified professional so that Google will not try to suppress any of my content in such light. This is especially true for two reasons:
1. The content I write is prone to disagreeing with certain "mainstream" health claims which are seen as official and therefore important;
2. I want to focus more on product marketing (naturally), which doesn't go down too well for some health sites.

At the same time, I think that, although it is unfortunate, Google is heading more into a space in which those "officials" with licenced experts and officials have automatically more authority and potential to reach the audience.

It seems like a "hit and miss" scenario for now, which is why it's difficult to create a solid strategy going forward...

I suppose it's a waiting game using analytics to see what happens? Either way, thanks again! Your response is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
James

Yeah sometimes I think it's moving into the direction where every time we write anything online any place we should include a legal disclaimer signature. Ridiculous.

Anyway... really for all the rant I gave... I see it as being much more about reaching your target audience. That is how I came to view it with my sites. I absolutely do not want to reach people looking for gurus, professional bodybuilders, certified fitness trainers, etc. And I want to only reach people who simply want to learn more about what another ordinary everyday person (very much like themselves) does for fitness.

So really plastering all of that "legal disclaimer" stuff and trying to push away everyone looking for "pro" and official site is actually very good for reaching my target audience... just an average guy who wants to learn more about other average guys have got good fitness results at home.

IMPORTANT: This comment represents my personal opinon. Anyone reading this content needs to be aware this comment came from my brain and you will need to use your own brain to read and interpret it... and obviously you choosing to read it, interpet it and use it in any way then becomes 100% your responsibility and not mine. "Grownup lessons 101"

I see exactly what you mean! Such an approach is more than likely going to help, but could simultaneously create some difficulty in building authority by creating content with that extra value which requires more of a trust factor.

I'll be trying to reach out to those with more experience and see if I can get some more direct information.
