Choosing Your First Niche : Profit or Passion ?
When I first started out in affiliate marketing, the biggest question to overcome is How To Choose A Niche For Affiliate Marketing.
Should I choose something I really love to do everyday ?
Should I choose something related to my current job ?
Or should I choose something profitable like a Make Money Online niche?
My Newbie Mistake
Before I joined Wealthy Affiliate (WA), I was like you. I was searching everywhere for bits and pieces of information from google, YouTube ,social media etc. The so called gurus all have their magic solution to pitch to you and would eventually sell you a piece of expensive Get-Rich-Quick course.
In my first blog in WA, I told the story of how I was scammed. I joined an expensive email marketing course which basically only taught me to set up an autoresponder and one landing page with zero marketing training, which was the most important part of affiliate marketing.
When I asked this question : " How to choose my first niche ?" I was told to ignore my passion and to choose profitable products like digital products in JVZoo as my trainer was a seller there. I ended up choosing my trainer's digital products to promote in JVZoo as my first niche.
I Was Faking It
While trying to market the products, I worked hard to make myself seemed like an expert in digital products, which I was not.
I had totally no clue about what I was doing as I was just a newbie. I was basically faking it in a so called profitable niche which I was not familiar with .
And I failed miserably.
Choosing Your First Niche
I found and joined WA just last month.
A seasoned WA member told me that the Making Money Online niche is the hardest to go into for a newbie and the most competitive. Well, if I had known that, I could have saved lots of scam money and gone for a cruise instead !
In his training, Kyle suggested that we should concentrate on the low hanging fruit, which would make us easier to rank in google. Why fight a bloody war with the giants and sharks in the big competitive world, when you can easily win in your own turf?
I cracked my head to choose a niche to start.
Then it hit me. Why not choose health as my niche, since I am a pharmacist and I am passionate about health plus I knew the topic very well. To narrow it down further, I chose my new niche to be Health After 40, which focused on health topics for people in their 40s like me.
And of course, the niche should be profitable as well. Just do a google search with your niche + affiliate and there will be many sites practically begging you to be their affiliates and offering generous commissions.
I Think I Am Doing Okay
At the time of this post, my website HealthAfter40 is up and running. I have already 6 new health posts in my niche, all with affiliate offers. I write my blogs from my heart and my experiences. I think I sound real and sincere in my sites. I don't have to pretend to be an expert in a topic I am not.
And best of all, I already made my first sale from this site since joining WA for less than 2 weeks.
Conclusion & My Advice
To all newbies out there, my advice would be to choose a topic that you are already familiar with. Something you are passionate about. Then, profits would come as a second criteria.
Every niche has products to sell and if you are confused on where to start, Amazon affiliates would be an easy choice as they sell basically everything under one roof.
What is your take on this topic ? Profits of Passion ?

So I'm always on the fence about this. On the one hand, you need to have passion and interest, otherwise you'll give up. On the other hand, if people just follow their passion, everyone will build the same blogs.
Let's look at it in an offline world. You have got plenty of people living in a small town who are into fitness, but they can't all become fitness trainers. So for them, maybe following their passion as a business isn't the best idea.
What about someone who lives in a small town but is a massive fan of Hip Hop. Is a Hip Hop store in a small town going to make much money? Probably not.
On the other hand, you could have the person who is passionate about Surfing, and he wants to spend all of his time surfing, so he builds a profitable business where there's a demand (let's say, crime scene clean up), and he uses that to fuel his passion...he also uses his passion as inspiration for going to work.
He's not into cleaning up crime scenes, but it gives him a business that let's him go surfing because it's so profitable he can hire people to do the work for him.
Now, when you're online, the economics work differently, and a hip hop store isn't limited to a small town..but the theory is the same, why start a fitness site when dozens exist already, instead, start a site that fills a demand, and use your passion as the motivation to make that site profitable.
Hi Dom,
You are totally right on this ! I like your quote : Use you passion as the motivation to make the site profitable.
