My Annual Tradition
Everyone has their own holiday traditions, whether it’s decorating the tree, baking cookies, or watching your favorite holiday movies.
One of mine is A Christmas Carol. I’ve seen just about every version — to the point where you could start an argument over who played the best Ebenezer Scrooge.
But for me, the heart of the story lives in the original pages. Every year, I pull my well-worn copy of Dickens’ classic from the shelf to escape — and to reflect.
And no matter how often I’ve read this tale, something new always reveals itself to me each year.
This year? It was the nature of time itself that stood out.
What struck me this year was how Dickens uses the ghosts as more than just story devices. They’re not just memories, moments, or maybes. They’re time itself – and they don’t arrive in the order you expect.
The Ghost of Christmas Past: Always Present
It appeared suddenly! This ghost pulled the curtains back without permission when it first arrived. Scrooge wasn’t ready for it.
But when you think about it, the past is never really past – it’s always right there.
In life or business, we have:
· Regrets
· Old stories
· Limiting beliefs
· Lessons learned
We think we’ve moved on, but our past is always walking beside us. Every time I hesitate to write, doubt myself, or shrink my vision – it’s the Ghost of Christmas Past, reminding me where that fear was born.
The Ghost of Christmas Present: Late Arrival
Scrooge put every one of his curtains aside and established a sharp look-out all around his bed, waiting with his curtains drawn for the Ghost of Christmas Present. When in fact, the Ghost was in the other room – waiting on SCROOGE to come in!
Doesn’t that sound like us? Always waiting for the perfect moment. Always waiting for the present to arrive.

In life/business, we’re often stuck, thinking:
· Once I’m ready …
· When things slow down …
· When the time is right …
· When I know more …
· After I fix this one thing …
We wait behind drawn curtains for opportunity to knock — when the real gift is in opening them ourselves.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come: Arrives Early
Whether it’s the literary version or one of the many film adaptations (my personal favorites include George C. Scott, Patrick Stewart, and Jim Carrey’s animated portrayal), the very SECOND the Ghost of Christmas Present vanishes — the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is already approaching.
“… a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him.”
It didn’t wait for its turn, nor did it wait for Scrooge to return to his chamber. It was already there.
Like Scrooge, we fear the unknown and dread outcomes that haven’t happened and may never happen.
In life/business, these phantoms are always approaching:
· Anxiety
· Fear of Failure
· Fear of Irrelevance
· Fear of Wasted Time
· Fear of Judgement
Whatever it may be, they arrive early. And they’re always uninvited.
Funny how we wait on the present, try to bury the past, and let the future barge in early — before it’s due.
The Turn: What Scrooge Realized (And So Can We)
Like Ebeneezer Scrooge, we don’t have control over when these ghosts show up, but we do get to respond.
Scrooge changed – not because time waited – but because he didn’t wait anymore.
We can choose presence. We can thank the past, face the future, and show up now.
In the end, Scrooge’s story isn’t about ghosts. It’s about attention. He learned to live the now, honor the past, and greet the future with action.
Your Ghosts, Your Time
Which ghost is knocking on your door right now?
Are you haunted by the past, hiding from the present, or dreading a future you haven’t lived yet?
Maybe this season isn’t just about gifts under a tree — but the gift of being present, even when the ghosts still linger.
