Follow the Yellow Brick Road: My Journey at Wealthy Affiliate
On Friday night after Thanksgiving, I was getting ready to stream "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" when I stumbled across "The Wizard of Oz" — one of those classics I’ve seen a hundred times and usually pass right by.
But this time, I let it play… and something hit differently.
Earlier that day, I had commented on a blog by Mel Waller, where he asked a simple but powerful question: “What’s your number one reason for being at Wealthy Affiliate?” I didn’t think too hard about my response at the time — but somewhere between the Yellow Brick Road and the Tin Man’s search for a heart… it started to come together.
And I realized... the land of Oz is kind of like being at Wealthy Affiliate.

Dorothy in Oz = Us at WA
Dorothy didn’t arrive in Oz by choice — she was swept in by a whirlwind.
Sound familiar?
Many of us found our way to Wealthy Affiliate because life pulled us here — a job loss, a search for financial freedom, or just the desire to try something new. I was certainly searching for a different stream of income while exploring paths outside my 9-to-5.
Enter Glinda the Good Witch — or in our case: Kyle, Carson, and Jay — offering us that early guidance:
“Just follow the yellow brick road.”
At WA, that road is the training, the community, and the process. It’s not always easy — but it’s laid out, step by step.

The Journey (and the Connections We Make)
Along the way, Dorothy meets three unforgettable companions:
- The Scarecrow (who wanted a brain)
- The Tin Man (who wanted a heart)
- The Cowardly Lion (who wanted courage)
And it hit me — these characters remind me of the WA community.
We’re all on different quests:
- Some want to learn how online business works (brains)
- Some want to find passion and purpose (heart)
- Some are building the courage to start… or not give up (courage)
Just like Dorothy, we don’t walk alone. We meet allies — a fellowship of support — who help each other, lift each other up, and remind us that even without all the answers, we grow when we keep following the road.
The Wicked Witch?
Every story needs some tension. An obstacle.
Maybe the Wicked Witch in our story isn’t a person — but that little voice of self-doubt, the fear of failure, or the temptation to give up.
She shows up when progress is slow. When comparison creeps in. When we wonder if we’re cut out for this.
But like any great antagonist, she exists to test how badly we want the goal. She stands in our way so we can prove we’re not turning back.

The Power Was in Her All Along
Of course, the twist is that Dorothy always had the power to go home — she just didn’t know it.
That part stayed with me.
A lot of what we’re seeking — success, freedom, fulfillment — isn’t something a platform, a mentor, or a course gives us. The tools and community are real, but the true power?
That’s already inside us.
WA gives us the roadmap — but we’re the ones who have to walk it.

So Why Am I Here?
I'm here because I believe this journey matters — and I don’t want to walk it alone.
I want to build something meaningful. I want to learn, help, grow, and keep moving forward… even when the bricks get uneven or the path gets long.
And I know others are walking their own road beside me — that makes all the difference.
What About You?
So now I’m curious:
What’s your yellow brick road look like?
What are you hoping the Wizard gives you?
Whatever brought you here — I’m glad it did.
Let’s keep walking — together.
Isaiah 😁

Beautiful story and analogy Isaiah! I came here to WA for pretty much the same reason as you. To find another source of income outside of my regular job.
I will be retiring in another 3 or 4 years and I don't want to rely solely on my social security retirement benefits. After 12 years here, I have no plans for leaving anytime soon.
I make money from affiliate marketing and I want to see what else I can earn from using these new AI-powered tools WA is providing for us.
Robert
Thanks Robert - and I agree! I'm attempting to take advantage of these AI tools to level up as well.
Hi Isaiah
I love this post - so creative and so true.
My yellow brick road is a mixture of all three I think.
1) To learn more (brains)
2) To find my true calling (heart)
3) To live my life on my own terms (courage)
As for realising it was all within me all along - I think I've realised that, and I now want to help others realise that too.
Thanks for sharing.
Hope you have a wonderful and amazing day.
Gail

Awww this is beautiful way to put the two together. Its lovely how you put it together. The yellow brick road is freedom to work the online business and be successful and share my story and provide solutions for others. The wizard has provided me all that I need to know to create, implement, test and run the online business and reach out to certain niches. I'm glad to be here as well and I agree to walk together in this WA community in partnership.
Thanks Cydney. Glad to have you here at WA.
