Oh, the Places You'll Go! A Dr. Seuss Guide to Starting Your Online Business

When I mentioned my parenting and children's book websites recently, Robert (bloomergp08) said it took him on a trip down memory lane, reminding him of Dr. Seuss books which he used to love as a child. And then one book came to mind that I thought I'd share with you. It's a book that's not just for children, not just for new graduates or dreamers, but for grown-ups who are on the verge of becoming entrepreneurs, or - like us here at Wealthy Affiliate - for entrepreneurs who may be hitting a bump in the road.

Dr. Seuss seems to have written Oh, the Places You'll Go! especially for those who are building something new online.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” These lines alone are a rallying cry for entrepreneurs. Whether you're launching an affiliate marketing blog, selling handmade candles, or publishing books, the online world offers a blank canvas. You just need a little courage, a bit of curiosity, and a willingness to learn as you go.

Dr. Seuss doesn’t shy away from the bumps. He warns us about “Bang-ups and Hang-ups” and the dreaded “Waiting Place.” And isn’t that familiar? The tech snags, the days with clicks but no sales, the temptation to wait until everything is perfect before pressing publish.

Then there’s the “Waiting Place” –

…for people just waiting.

Waiting for a train to go

or a bus to come, or a plane to go

or the mail to come, or the rain to go

or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow

or waiting around for a Yes or No

or waiting for their hair to grow.

Everyone is just waiting…

NO!

That’s nor for you!

Let's remember that the magic happens when we drag ourselves anyway from that "Waiting place" where we want all the dots to join up. The magic happens when we post that first blog, write that first product review, or share our story as it is unfolding.

You’ll get mixed up, of course,

as you already know.

You’ll get mixed up

with many strange birds as you go.

Online business is full of twists and turns - algorithms, trends, unexpected tech problems. But it’s also full of connection. You’ll meet fellow creators, mentors, and customers who remind you why you started. And, like Seuss says,

Step with care and great tact

and remember that Life’s

a Great Balancing Act.

So if you’re building something, let this book remind you that progress doesn’t have to be perfect. That detours are part of the map of 'Oh, the places you'll go!'

And will you succeed?

Yes! You will indeed!

(98 and 3/4 per cent guaranteed,)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting.

So...get on your way!

With many thanks to Robert (boomergp08) who inspired this blog.

Good morning Isabella,

Thank you for your blog post.

I think it's far too easy to talk about doing things, rather than taking solid action. Nothing happens until we take action! The good news is that we don't fail with our mistakes, we learn by them and keep moving forward.

Have a fantastic day.

Roy

2

Thank you, Roy. Yes, you are absolutely right. Better to make mistakes and learn from them than wait forever to have 'learned it all' without actually having put any of it into action.

Isabella

2

It's always a pleasure, Isabella!

I was looking at Kyle's blog post from last Monday's motivation and he was also saying about continually moving forward and learning from our mistakes! We never stop learning.

A very happy Friday to you.

Roy

1

Thank you, Roy. Yes, this attitude of 'never stop learning' is what I love about Wealthy Affiliate and this community. There is always something new to learn and it keeps things interesting.

You have a great Friday too.
Isabella

1

I agree with you, Isabella, it's a very friendly and inspiring community, that encourages us to learn, which is a good.

I agree, it's good and kind of therapeutic to learn new things.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Roy

1

Thank you, Roy. You too. It's been sunny here this morning and I've had a very nice walk with my dog.

Isabella

1

That sounds like a great thing to do, Isabella!

We have been fortunate really in the UK this year, we've had a good summer, here in East Anglia and the weather hasn't been too cold yet, which is good.

It's great you have a dog, I do too, they are such wonderful animals and also they get you out of the house and more people speak to you when you have a dog!

Have a fantastic day.

Roy

1

Good morning, Roy. Yes, we've had good weather here in the Cotswolds too. I also find dog walks useful for thinking things over. Sometimes I don't really feel like going out, but when I come back I am refreshed and less tired than when I set out.

Have a great start to the week.

Isabella

1

Good morning Isabella,

It sounds like you live in a wonderful part of the world, Isabella, I believe you mentioned it before, but I couldn't remember! Yes, I hear you, regarding your dog, I feel the same sometimes, but it's very therapeutic and good for the body!

All the best.

Roy

1

Hello again, Roy.

Yes, we live just north of Cheltenham in a lovely village with a view onto Cleeve Hill. We moved here 15 months ago. Used to live in Oxford.

Best wishes,

Isabella

1

Good morning Isabella,

That sounds like a nice place to live, I have always enjoyed the countryside and much prefer to have fields around me, rather than concrete! I haven't been to Oxford, or if I have, it was a long time ago, I did mention going with a friend of mine, at some point, it hasn't happened yet.

I'm glad that you are enjoying your new house, etc, village life is good!

Have a fantastic day.

Roy

1

Yes, I love living in the village. I don't even need to go into Cheltenham except very occasionally. There is a larger village just down the road with a large Tesco, Lidl, individual butchers, bakers, a small bookshop, library...

Time goes so quickly. The last few days I've tried to take the dog out whenever it wasn't raining. I've been lucky and timed it right most days. Quite amazing...it pours for hours, then the sun comes out and it looks as if there's no such thing as 'bad weather'.

Have a good rest of the day.
Isabella

That's great to hear, Isabella, likewise, it really suits me, I love to have the fields around me. It's also surprising how much time it saves when we don't have to keep driving around for everything. Which I guess is why I choose online shopping for most things!

Allegedly, we have a very wet day here, that started last night and is supposed to go on until tomorrow, however, the weathermen have been wrong before! I'm glad you have escaped the rain, that's a good bonus.

A very happy Friday to you.

Roy

1

Thanks, Roy. Looks like there'll be little chance of escaping the rain today. I was out for a long time with my dog yesterday - sunshine and warm - so that she can just have a quick walk today.

Yes, I do mainly online shopping too. I need crutches to walk and most of my 'walking energy' gets used up walking the dog and doing housework.

Have a good Friday, even if it's wet.

Isabella

1

It's always a pleasure, Isabella!

Yesterday was an exceptionally wet day and a good day to be indoors, although, it almost seemed like it was dark the whole day! It's good to take advantage of the better weather! I notice that here in East Anglia, the temperatures are going to be dropping rapidly, as we move into winter!

I'm not a great fan of this time of year, as every day is getting darker! However, the good news is that by the time we get back to work after Christmas, the days are starting to lengthen and bulbs start to come through. In fact, I have already seen a few daffodil bulbs poking their way through, which is a great reminder that spring isn't too far away!

I must admit, I find online shopping really convenient, although it may not be the most sociable thing to do. I'm sorry that you need crutches to walk on, that's not easy, but it looks like you're getting over the problem, especially if you're walking your dog, which is good news.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Roy

1

I don't like the dark days either. But at least it hasn't been particularly cold yet. We have two winter jasmines climbing up the front of our bungalow and they are both flowering, which looks nice. And lovely red and orange pyracantha berries.

Have a great Sunday.

Isabella

1

I understand where you're coming from, Isabella! I think we have been very fortunate with the weather, although it looks like the cold weather is coming in this week, which is to be expected!

I'm glad you appreciate the flowers, etc, even though we are going into winter, it's wonderful to see similar colours, especially things like the winter jasmine and all the berries on the pyracantha.

As I have worked outside, virtually all my working life, it's good to see things coming to life. Most of the leaves are down now, but the weeping willows seem to hold the leaf for a bit longer, however, it's nice to see trees budding up and getting ready for the spring! These are great signs to keep moving forward.

A very happy Sunday to you.

Roy

1

Thank you, Roy. Yes, I absolutely love living in the village close to hills and meadows. And I love our garden.

Have a wonderful Sunday too.

Isabella

1

It's always a pleasure, Isabella!

That's wonderful, I think it's great when people recognise that they live in nice places and have a good way of life. I often think that a simple life is the best, I mean that in the right sense.

Have a fantastic day.

Roy

1

Thanks, Roy.

The sun is already shining - makes it a lovely start to the week.

I actually like Mondays - the whole week still ahead... I have several projects on the go and am really enjoying working on them. The Image Studio is helping a lot and Kyle has just given lots more ideas about how to use it. One thing I will immediately start using on my parenting site and possibly for one of the picture books I am working on.

Have a fantastic start of the week. Lovely chatting with you every morning.

Isabella

1

It's always a pleasure, Isabella!

I must admit, seeing the sun shining, makes a big difference!

Likewise, it's good to try and enjoy every day and look forward to every day!

It's good to have projects and things to do, Isabella, and goals, etc.

I can't believe how good the image studio is, it really seems to work well and efficiently. Traditionally, I have used Canva and a combination of chat GPT to create my YouTube thumbnails, but the image studio seems to be doing a really good job and it's so quick. I'm sure this will be really helpful for your projects, etc.

Likewise, Isabella, it's good to chat with you.

Have a fantastic day.

Roy

1

Thank you, Roy. Yes, I did have a good day. As you say, seeing the sun shining first thing in the morning gets the day off to a good start.

I don't know if you saw Kyle's blog - you can get 10,000 AI credits if you comment there: I don't know about you, but I am zooming through my credits with the Image Studio. I don't need the AI Writer much - will be able to manage without it completely, but the Image Studio will be a great help. I am going to adopt Gail's method and get good images from the Image Studio and then go to Canva to add text myself. It'll save on AI credits when it gets it wrong and also give me more control over fonts, colours and size.

Coming to the end of the day here but still need to finish off a couple of things.

Talk again soon.

Isabella

1

That's good to hear, Isabella! The sun really does make a difference to the day! It's Starlight here at the moment, and very cold! A big difference from last week!

Thank you for pointing out Kyle's blog, I did see it and like you, my credits are going down. However, I still have 43,000+ credits, so it should be enough, or more than enough, to see me through until the end of the month. I don't really use the credits for anything else.

I do exactly the same, Isabella, like you, I don't use the writer, but I am finding Image Studio exceptionally good! I generally edit my thumbnails in Canva, having said this, most of the time, Image Studio seems to be doing a good job of the titles. There have been a few mistakes, but not many!

I have often created thumbnails, using ChatGPT, it will either make really good thumbnails, or absolutely appalling thumbnails! But the fact is, it can't really do titles, so, I'm impressed at how well Image Studio is at creating the titles and it's only just started!

Wishing you a great day and all the best.

Roy

PS: I appreciate the thought of you giving me the heads up, regarding the extra credits, thank you.

1

Good morning, Roy. Sorry for the late reply. I've been busy over the weekend and I'm finding it difficult even getting through the notifications. And yours was buried among them.

Hope you had a good week. We had dreadful weather on Saturday and lovely weather yesterday.

Have a great week
Isabella

1

Good morning Isabella,

That's not a problem, I know what it's like!

I have been particularly active on the Wealthy Affiliate this month, but I do understand where you're coming from, especially if you write a blog post, that can bring a lot of engagement, etc.

Yes, thank you, my week is going well. I think we've reached that time a year, where the weather won't be brilliant for a few months. But at least we can look forward to the days lengthening after Christmas.

Wishing you all the best and a great day.

Roy

Thanks for the shout out Isabella!

We all must not procrastinate when deciding if we should start this Affiliate Marketing journey because...

"Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find, for a mind maker-upper to make up his mind."

2

Thanks, Robert. Yes, there are so many lovely lines that just want to be quoted.

Fantastic, Isabella! :D

Thank you, JD.

You're welcome, Isabella.

Oh, the Keywords You’ll Choose!
by Dr Sleuss, Estranged Brother of the Dr.

You’ll sit with your laptop, you’ll frown and you’ll stare,
“I need the right keywords—but which ones are where?”
You’ll type and you’ll click, you’ll mutter and muse,
Then Jaaxy will whisper, “Here’s what to choose!”

Pick ones with some traffic, but not much too high,
Or you’ll fight giant websites till the day that you die.
Long-tail is your buddy, so keep it in sight,
“Best red shoes for dancing” might just be right!

Don’t chase every keyword that glitters and shines,
The gold’s in the searcher with clear, focused lines.
Ask, “What do they want?”—it’s not just a game,
Intent is the secret, remember that name!

You’ll rank on page one if your content rings true,
Not stuffed with old nonsense like “cheap discount shoe.”
So research with reason, and rhyme with some flair,
And soon you’ll see traffic pop up everywhere!

Then grin at your screen and declare with delight,
“I’ve conquered the keywords! My SEO’s tight!”
Now off you go, writer—your blog’s in the groove,
With words that bring readers—and profits that move!
