Running away vs Running towards

Have you ever wondered if you are running away from something or running towards something?

My husband and I started this year with only one goal in mind, we will take part in 52 trail run events during 2020. We started the year off in first gear, we did not skip a single weekend's trail adventure run. March came, and we suddenly went into lock down, no more trail run adventures.

Being locked up did not demotivate us, in fact, we started running through our yard, not on a weekly basis, but daily to keep busy.

As soon as we could run outside again, we started running at a trail and mountain bike resort in the bushveld. This last weekend while I was running this question popped into my head .... what am I running away from or running towards?

- It did not help that the cashier mentioned that there is one leopard roaming the fields, but we do not have to worry, he keeps himself scarce! -

Running into the unknown, my eyes were more behind me than in front of me, I had no idea where the path was taking me, and to top it off I physically felt like I was running away from a leopard chasing me, I had to look over my shoulder every now and again to make sure I was still alone. I think my heart rate and breathing was also more influenced by fear than getting actually tired and out of breath of the running.

Running with a group of people make all the difference, especially when I have done the track on a previous occasion...I spend less time looking behind me and more time on where I am going, and also knowing that I am not alone heading towards the finish line. Enjoying the run.

Running is definitely more purposeful when the destination is decided upon

All to often, we spend our energies running out of fear. We run aimlessly away from the thing that we believe is going to hurt us. Our lives are very similar to this chase scene, some of us run out of fear. The problem develops as a result of not having a destination in mind. If our only goal is not to get hurt, we often times will not reach our other goals.
