In The Tea Leaves

Tea Leaf Reading ~ Tasseography. The art of reading tea leaves is referred to as Tasseography (or Tasseomancy) and is a divination or fortune-telling method that in western tradition interprets patterns in tea leaves. The term also refers to the reading of coffee grounds, especially in the Middle Eastern tradition.

There is so much I could do with this, but I’m going to stay on topic with my intent for this blog. So I have this first niche - teaching guitar theory. Choosing that as a niche was certainly a labor of love. Putting the website together proved to be quite interesting:

  • I love to play “live” and look forward to it every weekend!
  • Guitar theory is my passion
  • I have enjoyed the few ventures where I actually taught guitar lessons – albeit always free gratis. Suddenly I’m finding myself with the ability to write down and hone out some actual “lessons” instead of just taking some jottings and drawings that would walk out of the door forever otherwise!
  • It was just plain fun because I could always find a student WAY more talented than me and watching them catch the “aha!” and take it away to their personal “toolkit”
  • I simply never thought I would ever make a dime promoting it.
  • After asking for comments/feedback – I really don’t remember which – I found myself reading this scathing pitch-back from a more senior WA member who had always taken music theory to heart and was obviously much, much more knowledgeable than myself and just had to draw his weapon. He felt the need to call my website a scamsite simply because I had written a page (at Kyles’s behest and unknown to my critic) telling the link between my website and Wealthy Affiliate.
  • I really wanted to tell that guy he needed to find himself a life or a hobby or something. Seriously? You can get that pissed off over music theory?

Since then, at Kyle’s behest, I began the Affiliate Bootcamp and have delved off into Affiliate Marketing.

I think I’m relatively good at it. I’m certainly not stupid and I have always thrown myself whole-heartedly into whatever my focus is. That has been Affiliate Marketing.

Critics and commenters both say, everything is here, all I need to do is sit back and wait. I take those last few words with a grain of salt because I know one just doesn’t do that. But I get the gist of what is being said. I’m simply being patient as I learn.

Then a few weeks ago I began to get these messages on Facebook. Not about MyHoneyMoneyTree or Affiliate Marketing. No.

These were coming from my old niche site, GuitarTheoryWithMike. Things like,

  • “could you post something new?”
  • “some of us would like to hear from you again.”
  • “are you coming back?”
  • “please come back”

I searched high and low through the comments on the old niche site but never saw anything like those remarks or any others. That made me scratch my head.

Sometime in the past I had made attempts to get visitors / engagers / site-clickers to my site with posts on Facebook. I thought at the time it was to no avail.

But I made a new post this time: do any of you guys that “Like” my page actually go there? As it turns out, I’ve got over 2,000 followers on Facebook! I swear, I did not know!

But I do know where my immediate focus of attention should be! And will be!

And what about the little blurb at the beginning about the tea leaves and coffee leaves? I think it was in the tea leaves all along…

So the tea leaves told you do take care of your music blog again because there you have people who wait for you! What a great success falling from the sky! Do go ahead! (I really love your post!)

And as for the comments: don't worry. It seems to be common practice among WA members to just delete comments if they don't give them 100% applause. (Some of my comments were deleted when I said something which didn't fit in their expectations - boom-away, no notice, no contact, just away). The tolerance level to respect other people's perspective is very low. So why don't you do it, too?- I mean: don't hesitate, it is not against the practiced etiquette.

Thanks for your reply, Heidi! The main thing I have taken from this is that I've neglected a "core" beginning in me and that, money or no money, these users have clamped onto something I had to offer and want more of it. It is up to me to deliver what I can, the best way I can.

The other thing that I take from this is that none of us know just exactly who it is we touch in "that way" - something Aloha said... what about those that that just aren't the type to reach out... but love your stuff?

And suddenly they reach out...

Yes, you are so right: we never know whom we reach without us knowing about it. Not many people like or comment to what we do. But they read or watch it. I am telling me that all the time when I get disappointed about the very few live watchers of our podcast. Then, in time, I notice that the numbers of views on YOutube creep up, at least a little, so it is worth it!

I don't just like this post...I love it! It makes a lot of sense. I read plenty of blogs and any comments, but until WA I've always kept comments to myself. It never meant I didn't like the site or wouldn't return. I'm just not a commenter. Now that I'm writing a blog, I do see how it's helpful to the site owner and it's a new habit I'm forming.

Your audience missed you forcing them to reach out! Think of the ones who just aren't the type to reach out, but love your stuff. Congrats on all your followers!

~Aloha

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Aloha! - it made me go back to a post a made on the site a while back about feedback and how it make me feel like I was getting something across. Or not.

And I left it that day feeling like no one commented because I was offering anything So I need to find a way open the communication gate and give it one more shot.

Mike
