The GROW Model in Coaching

Over the past few years, I had done training and actually provided services as a Professional Coach. My experiences have included Life Coaching, Business Coaching, and Leadership Development Coaching. The growth and interest in Coaching as a service and a profession has grown tremendously around the world not only as a professional interest, but as a potential benefit in personal and organization development.

Of course coaching practice and coaching methods do vary and are quite numerous. And I'm not talking about sophisticated analytical methods. The basis of coaching is to establish a relationship with the client that is founded on mutual respect and trust, and commitment to support the achievement of a goal. This is done primarily through a matter of strategic questioning on the part of the coach, active listening to allow the client to express his/her ideas without judgement or interruption, and helping the client commit to decisions that he/she has made to pursue the successful achievement of that goal.

A key component in coaching practice and engagement with clients is effective use of, what is known as the GROW model. This model, as illustrated above has four key components that a coach will use with a client to help the client reach his / her resolution of a problem or a "goal," if you will, that he/she wishes to pursue.

Key Elements of the GROW Model?

As you can see in the illustration, there are four basic elements to the GROW Model:

G - The Goal

There is usually one specific outcome of goal that one seeks to achieve or gain success

R - The Current Reality

What is the situation now? What factors are supporting the achievement of that goal, and what factors are delaying the achievement of the goal? How commited am I to making this goal successful? Or is there another more significant goal that I should consider?

O - Options

What choices or resources are available to help achieve the goal? What do I have to do to make this effort a reality? The "O" can also stand for "Obstacles." What obstacles might I have to resolve in order to achieve the goals and objectives that I have defined.

W - Way Forward

What are the next steps? At this point there might also be an addition of SMART objectives to help the client move forward and to give a way to monitor and measure success.

Applying the GROW Model to Our Affiliate Marketing Efforts

The GROW model - in its simplicity - can actually be a powerful tool to help us stay focused and continue to move foward to achieving our Affiliate Marketing success, as well as success in other areas of our lives.

Once we define a goal - clearly - then we can identify where we are in moving toward that goal. In Affiliate Marketing, we defined our Money Goals at the beginning of our engagement with WA. Sometimes, we might realize that our initial goal might be either too broad, or actually part of a more realistice and accurate objective that we might wish to achieve.

That's where our reality comes in . . .

Where are we in terms of that goal? Are we really committed to working toward that goal, or is it still just an idea swimming around in our heads? Are we doing things and making habits . . . or making changes to reach our goals?

When we answer these questions, we might even gain more clarity on what our real desire and goal should be? And it's alright to make that adjustment.

Then we move toward our options.

What alternatives do we see to help achieve our goal in Affiliate Marketing? Or what obstacles are we facing in our efforts? Which option will help us reach our results more effectively and efficiently? Alternatively, what do we need to do to resolve any obstacles in our path?

Finally there is the way forward.

As I had mentioned above, The SMART approach to goal and objective setting might be usefulf. Briefly, SMART stands for

Specific - Measurable - Achieveable - Realistic - Time based

I'll save that for another blog.

In the coaching community the GROW model might come with some "add-ons," like T for Topic, or ME for Monitoring and Evaluation. But all of the components of this model will lead us to a particular conclusion: What do we want? Where are we now? What options do we have? and How will we move forward?
