Windows 10? - What now?
As Windows 8.1 will reach the end of mainstream support on 9 January 2018 and the end of extended support on 10 January 2023 is now the time to get Windows 10?
As we all know, it is free until the end of July (act soon!!) , but Microsoft has said that there will be no more Windows versions after Windows 10. This would seem to say that Windows 10 will continue to be developed without users having to pay for a new version every time one comes out (approximately every other year).
I have found that there is little difference when using Windows 10 so I would suggest that you upgrade before July 29 while you can still get it for free. If you don't like it, you can revert back to what you had before (7, 8 or 8.1) in the first 30 days from the upgrade. The Microsoft servers will likely get a lot busier toward 29 July, so do it as soon as you can.
Also, if you do upgrade, don't forget to back up all of your own data files to somewhere else, like to a separate external drive, or to the cloud, first!

Good advice re backing up your files Ian. I am firmly in the early adopter camp jumped at the window 10 opportunity quite a while ago. In our industry things are changing so rapidly, we need to keep up or get left behind. We need to think in terms of things are a changing and they are not going back.
