Problem solved!!!!!

I had ad blockers that were interfering with my links. They would not allow them to appear. I had some help from site support to remove them and I was able to post my links!! I even went to another article That I had written and posted links on that as well. EVERYTHING WORKED!!!!

So, check and see if you have ad blockers if you run into the trouble that I did, and THANK YOU ALL WHO responded to my problem.

I can move on now, YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, so I was wrong. I thought my problem was simply that I was in visual mode and not Text mode when I tried to post an affiliate link.

Well, That didn't work. I re-did everything. I posted the link in Text mode. It still did not work. Then I tried to post in text mode, then switch to visual mode before updating. That didn't work either.

I watched the training twice, I followed step by step. I still cannot get the links to work;

Now people are telling me that my ad blocker may be what is interfering. Why didn't Kyle mention ad blockers and Text mode verses Visual mode? His training is seriously lacking.

Usually he is very thorough. Not this time.

I have deleted my article and I will start over...tomorrow.

Everyone is being very helpful and I will try some of these suggestions when I re-do everything AGAIN, tomorrow,

I have to get this down before I can move on. I need to learn how to properly post links to my articles.

Then, once I learn this... I am posting a blog about what I had to do to make it work so someone else like me won't go through all this frustration!

Hi Virginia,

When you have a huge length of code like that, you can't add it to your site by highlighting texts.

This needs to be pasted on the TEXT tab of your site.

Here are some tutorials for you: Many times, you could just get an affiliate link (like just one URL link), so you would add that to your text like any internal linking you do where you highlight the text to add a link.

However, if you have coding block like you have, you need to treat it differently and that coding needs to be in the HTML part of your site. When you're editing a post, you're in the "VISUAL" tab, there's a "TEXT" tab, next to that (top right corner of your editor).

Before you click on the TEXT tab, just make sure your cursor is at the right place where you want the product or whatever that coding is for to show up at the right spot. Then click Text tab, and paste the code there.

Then go back to Visual, and you should see it there, as well as when you preview the post, you should see it and test it out.

You're trying to add coding block to a line of text and you can't do that. Check the trainings above and let me know if you still have any troubles.

Thanks!
Grace

Great Reply Grace and helpful links...

- Glen B

Thanks Glen, so is yours. :) Yeah, I always give out tutorials, there are so many on here and it's easier to learn when people get videos/trainings to follow.

I am getting very overwhelmed right now.

Just take it slow, Glen pointed out the difference in the two ways as well.

I agree!!

- Glen B

It is not helping if i do not understand the answer.

I am in tears. I just don't understand all this html stuff.

I understand Virginia,

HTML is a language that has to be learned. You don't necessarily need to learn it. You just need to learn how to use it in the platform.

Anybody can be taught..

I'm happy to help...

Take some time and get your composure and let me know when your ready..

- Glen B

I will try again tomorrow, I cannot take anymore confusion today.

The chat rewrote my previous response and interpreted the link tag instead of displaying the full text. Please ignore it. I have included the solution in the attachment.

I did not understand that

I was trying to write some html in my answer, but it didn't work. Sorry.

I feel like crying! I am trying SO hard! Why does everything have to be so damned annoying?

Hope you got it figured out, Virginia. Looks like you got some great answers.
All the best,
Wendi

So far, none that are helping me.

OK Virginia. I know this is frustrating. It's hard to try to fix something that we can't actually put our hands on, so be patient. We will all get through this.
Now, first thing is to go back and delete the link you tried to add. Then, have you gone back to the source and tried to get the link again? Sometimes that works for me.

YES!! I deleted the original three times! I deleted the links, I re-posted them three different ways! NOTHING is working! I feel like SCREAMING!!!!!

Maybe you should try Site Support found in the Help Center.
They are usually very quick on getting you the help you need. This could be a website problem.
Hope this works.
Wendi

Sigh...I feel like giving up.

Virginia, I felt exactly like you do when I was trying to add AdSense. LOL
My husband suggested that we just step away from the problem. Clear my head. If you have been working on this all day, maybe you should just step away from your computer for a while. Even for a day. Let your mind clear and come back to this problem fresh and ready to tackle it head-on.
I did this exact thing, and guess what, the next day, in a matter of minutes I figured out the problem, along with help from this awesome community. You are tired right now. Take a break. I promise it will help you find your solution.
All the best,
Wendi

I had a bad day yesterday. I was hoping to get some work done today and I am roadblocked. I am terrified of adsense. I have no idea what that is and if it is going to be like what I am going through now, I don't know how much more of this I can take!!

Is this an Amazon link and if so would you mind telling me which link you are trying to post and where are you trying to post it. I will try to post that link also. This way we can see if it is a bad link.

It is amazon and it is the courage to heal books. look at my link in my blog.

OK. Give me a bit to get back with you.

Thank you for spending time with my problem. You are awesome. Everyone is, I am just too overwhelmed to follow any more instruction. I need to walk away from it for awhile.

Ok. Let me know when you are back and feeling like handling this. I do see you have ad blocker. That is probably your problem.
Wendi

I think you may be right. Someone needs to tell Kyle to add this to his training...I got so confused!

Text Link Name
Do this on text section.

I DID!! I was in text mode.

Hi Virginia, In text mode, I use Text.

Text is the link name. An example:
Yahoo will add the link Yahoo and go to yahoo.com when clicked.

huh? I was in TEXT mode.

It looks like you are using a mix of the two.

This might help Disregard the fact that its about social media, the principle is the same : )

This is all information overload. I have like six links to watch and I just feel overwhelmed right now. I need to just walk away for awhile. Errrgh!

I've been through that lesson THREE TIMES!!! I followed him step by step! It is NOT WORKING!!!!!

Yes, Now I am getting frustrated!

Who are you getting the links from

Amazon

Ok good I think I know the problem I had the same problem when you go to get the link instead of clicking on get link click on the arrow next to it. It will bring up text link press highlight html and copy that then insert that into your links. you won't get the image so what I do is I go back and copy the image itself not the image link then add the image just like adding media images.

Huh? I am starting to glaze over. I am feeling very overwhelmed.

what's the product your searching

The Courage to Heal book and workbook.

Ok when you bring up the search don't click on the product in the search bar you'll see next to it get link click on the arrow next to it and it will bring up a link. press highlight html and then copy it then paste that into your links.

I will try that tomorrow. I am burnt out today.

The way I do links is like this:

1. write all your article text
2. Highlight the text that you want to change into a clickable link. For example "Click Here".
3. With the text highlighted, click the image in the toolbar that looks like a chain. It's to the right of the Left, Center, and Right text alignment buttons.
4. A box will appear. In that box you will paste the link for the site you want to redirect to.
5. Click the Blue arrow button, and the text you highlighted should have changed color and will now have a line underneath it.
6. Update your post, and your link should now display correctly.

Repeat these steps for however many clickable links you want to add.

I did that EXACTLY and it did not work for me.

YES!! I used the FULL link.

Yes I did that too.

Try starting over. This may be a bit of a pain, but Copy all the text you have in the "visual" tab, and paste it into Notepad. That will remove any/all formatting. Then take what is in notepad, and paste it back into the Visual Tab of wordpress. You might end up with one long paragraph of text, which is ok. We want to make sure any existing formatting is gone.

Update your post, and start over with the info I provided. That should work for you. All this should be done in the Visual tab, not the Text tab.

I understand the frustration, but please try what I suggested. There has to be some existing HTML formatting somewhere in your post that is causing this issue.

I don't want to confuse you, but if you're looking at your links in the Text window, which I really don't recommend, it should look similar to this
< a href= "(Website Link)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Website Text)

Ignore the Brackets, as I had to modify my link so you see the actual HTML, cause WA automatically sees the link and only posts that. I'm hoping this works.

What you're seeing is showing that part of the link creation HTML is missing, which is why it's displaying like it is. Please try what I suggested above, instead of trying to tinker with HTML. If you need to, step away for a little bit, and take your mind off it, and try again.

I did start over. I followed all the steps. Littlemamma touched on something though. One of her links suggested that I might have an add blocker that was interfering. I am getting burned out with all of this, though. It is all so damn frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you may need to take a break from it. Sometimes when you get frustrated, no matter what you do, nothing seems to go right. I've been there, and I understand.

Can you maybe take a screenshot of the Text view of the section where you're link is and attach it to your reply to my comment. I can maybe take a peek and see if there is something in the HTML that is slightly amiss.

Once you get it to work, I know you'll see how easy it really is, but right now it's a learning curve for you. Take a break, read a book, or watch TV for a bit, to take your mind off it, and then when you come back with fresh eyes, you may see things you've missed.

I am burning out on this. I need to walk away before I throw my computer...

This is the text view.

But remember, you have already survived the worse part, the actual trauma. Now it is time to stop letting that trauma continue. You can put an end to it by taking back the control of your life. That reclaiming of your life can start with the reading of The Courage to Heal. I promise you, it will be the best book (actually set of books) that you buy this year! You have to decide. Are you sick of the pain? Do you need direction? A plan? You can find direction and a plan in these books.

Take it slow

If it is hard for you to read " rel="noopener" target="_blank">The Courage to Heal, I recommend that you do it step by step. Take it slowly. Maybe take the books in to your therapists and ask him/her to help you get through them. These books are great for breaking the ice when in therapy and giving you topics to talk about and things to work on in therapy. I did this and my therapist was very helpful and plugged in to the work that I was doing while reading these books. She actually formed a support group based on these books and I joined it. It was very encouraging to be around others who were going through the same struggles as I was. It was good to hear other peoples's stories and to share my own. Mostly, it was good to not feel judged or looked down upon. I no longer see myself as damaged goods. I am a chipped pot that is still very useful!

But you don't have to be in therapy to get healing

Maybe you don't feel comfortable talking to someone about what you have been through. That is OK. You can just read " rel="noopener" target="_blank">The Courage to Heal and work through the workbook on your own, if that is where you feel the most comfortable. I do, however, recommend that you get a support system going. It could be a spouse, good friend, or even myself if you want to send me private emails at: virginia@virginiabuffett.com and I will respond to EACH and EVERY email that I receive. I am serious about making My Secret Place a soft place to fall. I want to help you to help yourself. You can do this! You CAN heal! I am also willing to publish your writings here at My Secret Place. If you have something that you want to share, you can share it here. Your input is valuable and welcome at My Secret Place.

This is just a good first step

Your healing has to start somewhere. Start with  The Courage to Heal and the workbook. You will be glad you did. Your pain may seem mountainous, but If you look at the pain in your life en mass, you will get discouraged. You just need to look but a few steps at a time, you will find the strength to go on. Just take baby steps. Start by buying the book. Read it slowly. Take your time. Then get support. I suggest a good therapist, but sometimes they are not easy to find. I know this, I have been down that road. But don't give up. You only lose if you quit. Don't quit. You are worth your good health. You deserve to heal and you CAN heal. You are not alone. You are not dirty. And you have nothing to be ashamed of. Hold your head up. You have a right to be whole.

Ok, take a deep breath before you read this. Your issue is actaully quite simple, and it is exactly what I was thinking it was.

The proper HTML text formatting of a link is as follows:
< a href= "(Website Link)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Website Text)

(Website Link) = Your affiliate link
(Website Text) = the text you are trying to make a clickable link

When looking at your text, it is completly missing the a href="(Website Link)" portion. So Wordpress has no clue where it is supposed to link to. HTML is a form of website code, and when any part of it is missing, WP, just interprets it as text, which is why it is displaying on your site the way it is.

Every link on your page only has: " rel="noopener" target="_blank">. When you look at the snippet of the proper code I posted above, do you see what is missing?

I think the only way to fix this will be to do it in text mode.

In each instance where you have " rel="noopener" target="_blank">, you will need to add the < a href= "(Website Link) right before it. Replace "(Website Link), with the your affiliate link, ie the full http:// www. your affiliate link. com. Make sure there is only one set of double quotes before and after the affiliate link.

After you fix one, remember to update your post. And view it, this should fix your issue. I had a feeling it was a HTML issue, which is why tinkering with it in the View mode didn't fix it. Just take it slow, and if anything I posted is confusing, just please ask.

WOW! I have NO IDEA how to do that! I am so confused. Is this what I am going to have to go through every damn time I try to add links? This is just TOO MUCH!! I have actually been trying to post this ONE article with links to Amazon in it for DAYS!!! Unbelievable!

No, you won't have to do this every time. This is just what you need to do to fix your current issue. For new content, you will just need to follow the steps I originally posted.

I know you're frustrated, and I'm trying my best to break it down as simply as possible. I feel bad that it seems like I'm actually frustrating you more, than I am helping. :-(

Maybe it would be easier to PM me, as I can take you through it step by step, instead of a long paragraph of text, which is just making you overwhelmed in addition to frustrated.

You are VERY helpful and I appreciate you VERY much. I am just so frustrated and overwhelmed right now that my brain will not take anything else in. I will try again tomorrow. I am going to delete everything AGAIN and start fresh tomorrow.

Sounds good. Go do something non-WA. If you need help tomorrow, just message me :-)

I will. right now I just am trying to get back to all the wonderful people who are trying to help me. This is how I got ranked in top 100. By being confused and asking a ton of questions!!! I don't even care about rank, I just want to get to a place where I understand all of this.

You'll get there. Just take it slow. Remember Rome was not built in a day, and neither is online affiliate success. You're doing the right thing with asking questions. And we're all here to help :-)

Not trying to build Rome. I just want to add a stupid link! Ugh! Thank you for your help and patience.

Frankly, I am a little annoyed at Kyle for not mentioning all the technical problems that may arise when adding links. He made it seem simple. I have ad blocker and I knew nothing about TEXT mode vrs Visual mode. I will sort this all out, then I will blog about how I fixed the problem so no one else will have to suffer the frustration that I am feeling right now.

Sadly, I can see both sides. I worked in IT support for over 10 years, and that was my biggest complaint was too many would write procedures that make assumptions that you already know A, B & C, and start on step D. This is the type of boat you're in. The training assumed you already had certain knowledge, ie to use the Visual mode, and not the Text mode. Text is where all the HTML, ie website coding lives, and when things go wrong in there, it can cause a huge mess that can be hard, and frustrating to fix. Hence your current situation.

Moving forward, stick to using only the Visual mode for the majority of your writing. There are certain instances where you will need to go into Text, like Amazon Native ads, but don't concern yourself with those right now.

And remember to not rush yourself. I know you want to finish the training and start making money, but you also need to ensure you truly understand the steps you're learning. Rushing can result in errors, that can be tricky to fix, especially when you don't know what you're looking for.

I am not rushing. I am learning everything from scratch and that is slowing me way down. I will not move on until I get this down. It would be crazy to move on without knowing how to post links.

Hi Virginia,

I have been struggling with the text links as well. I did find that I can add an image link as a media file, but I’ve had to do that in Wordpress after I’ve published my post.

I know that doesn’t totally answer your questions, but it’s a start. I’m curious what others suggest for the text links.

Regards,
TJ

I am trying not to get frustrated...
