Finally Ranking Seriously on Google

Well it has taken me a while and I have done it without resorting to Jaxxy or any of the keyword optimisation engines, I have got some serious rankings on Google.

I have been at this gig for around 3 years now with a bit of a break of around a year in the middle while I sorted out some life issues and hadn't really managed to post anything that got me anywhere near the top of Google rankings. I haven't been able to afford to subscribe to Jaxxy so have relied on just writing good content and haven't got too hung up on SEO stuff. Don't get me wrong, I don't completely disregard it but I don't make the focus of my blog posts SEO. While writing and maybe even after writing I do keep in mind phrases that might be used to search for the content I am writing and try and word the odd sentence or phrase to suit but that is about as much as I have bothered with optimisation, preferring to tell the story first.

Anyway I recently posted a blog on learning to surf in Japan and thought I would just do some checking up on how my writing style has evolved to suit Google's Almighty Search Engine. I entered a few different variations of phrases I would use if wanting to learn to surf in Tokyo and waalaa there I was consistently ranking on pages 2 and 3 of Google for around half of the phrase I used to search, so something must be working.

TAKEAWAY

So my takeaway from this is that while Search Engine Optimisation is undoubtedly important it isn't the be all and end all of making your blog / site visible. Write good content first and foremost, then once you have completed the text read through it and consider what phrases someone would use to find that information, retouch whatever phrases or sentences need improving and you will have something that over time will gain credibility.

GET SOCIAL

Once you have posted your blog, spend a little time promoting it on whatever social networks you use to get some momentum and get on to the next post...

Remember your whole post is full of keywords and Google doesn't just magically rank you only on the ones you are planning it reviews your whole post so write good content and you will probably find yourself being found under a whole range of keywords from the same post.

Well Tony, you've been a big help already. I look forward to more from your posts.

Thanks!

No worries, always happy to pass on advice (or experience both positive and negative...), good to hear it was a help.

Hi Tony, excellent post.

I have done some research to determine which WA websites aperar on page 1 Google, and I was surprised to find that the content of some of the websites was rather poor.

I can only guess that the owners have used the SEO key word software to the full extent.

Best regards
Keith

Hi Keith,
Thanks for that. I think I would rather risk lower rankings with better content which will be the reason people return than a high ranking SEO optimised site that people will visit once.
Cheers

Awesome, keep going.

This makes sense. Glad you're seeing results.

Thanks Erica

Thanks PJ
