Typos in Texts

I suffer from professional deformation, even though I have not been working in my profession for 4 years: I see most typos immediately.

Although I have to admit, I had to think about that phrase in the cover photo for a while before I understood it.

When I was still working as a graphic designer I collected funny and striking typos. Like this on:

I saw the above typo during a lecture in a museum. The room was full, the speaker spoke enthusiastically. And even though he kept looking at his own screen, as many speakers do when giving a PowerPoint presentation, he didn't see his typo until I took a picture of it.

I suspect he was in too much of a hurry when he made his presentation. :)

You usually do not see your own typos. Fortunately, we have a grammar checker here in WA. And since I am not English, I also have Grammarly installed on my computer.

What's the funniest typo you've seen?

Ha! I love this - professional deformation. I've wondered how to describe my ability to catch the typos immediately...

Offhand,I don't recall any typos that come to mind, but I do know that I see them in the blog titles posted here...recently the Your instead of You're...in the title...

Do you tell them, or let it go?

Do you want to be told or not??

Rudy

Spotted! Very funny, or was that a genuine typo? :-)

Yes, please, I want to be told. โค๏ธ
But I rarely tell others nowadays. Unless I know people very well and know that they would want to hear it. My way of talking seems to be quite direct, or so they said so, and a lot of people didn't appreciate that. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Thanks, Rudy ๐Ÿ˜˜

I bet it was on purpose, Colin, to see if we are still paying attention. :)

@hmommers- Fixed it.. blame the small phone keyboard...grin..

Ahh, too bad, I loved it :-D

Personally, I would let it go when it comes to comments. I always seem to find the typo after I've replied, so I already know. However, if someone posts something they want to put on their website and asks for comments, I'll respond. I guess I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable by being called out, no matter if the intentions are good.

Yeah, I feel the same way....although, when the title of the blog post is spelled incorrectly, I want to bring it to their attention, maybe with a pm.

Very funny! I'm the same. What gets me occasionally is autocorrect on texts. There's been some doozies that I won't even mention here.
Great post! Thanks.

THANKS, STEVE. Yes, autocorrect is notorious for the misconceptions it has caused. And there are countless of them on the internet.

Coincidentally I read this WhatsApp dialogue between a father and a daughter the day before yesterday:

F: Hey honey, how's your day?

d: "Good, I'm having the best weed of my life"

F: "Oh me tooโ€ฆ where did you get yours from"

d: "NO NO NO I meant WEEK! Wait what dad?"

F: "Let's not tell mom about this conversation ..."

very funny. Thanks Hannie.

I was a Nursing Assistant for 15+ years. Something that will always stick in my head is check, recheck, and check again. Even doing this sometimes mistakes can still slip by. This is also something I instill in my grandson, the earlier the better.

Even though I'm careful and reread my comments, every now and then I miss something. It annoys me when I do that, but I try to remember the old saying "to err is to be human". I can honestly say it often doesn't help.

I can imagine, Gwendolyn, especially in such an important job as you had! Thanks :)

If you are a perfectionist (I am one, and probably you too) it's very hard to forgive yourself any mistakes. I have a friend who couldn't care less. She even makes typo's in important offers to clients. And when she gets any remark about it, she is the one laughing the most so they always forgive her. :)

I had to rewrite my entry in the nurses log because I was too tired. The entry was illegible...

Yes, I'm a perfectionist and get annoyed when I make a mistake. I know everyone makes mistakes but I still beat on myself. Maybe we're on one end of the spectrum and your friend is on the other!! Not sure if that's good or bad since both could be considered extreme.

Ditto!!

Hi Hannie.
I make quite a few when using the phone. Especially when doing WA comments. I often have to go back in and edit.

I don't know about the funniest, but I do remember the most embarrassing.

A close golfing friend came skiing with a group that I organised. He was 5 feet tall yet the best player in our golf society with a handicap of 2 but in our competitions always played off of 0. For anyone who doesn't know how golf scoring works, he played to a very high standard.

We were in a self-catered chalet so with agreement from everyone I posted a rota of minor chores during the fortnight.

I accidentally spelt his name (which is Brian) as Brain. Copy and paste made sure it was repeated throughout the rota and instantly obvious to others, but I hadn't noticed. Had I done so, I would have corrected it.

Unfortunately, the first person who saw the error laughed and pointed it out. Brian (a 35-year-old) shocked those present by throwing what would best be described as a tantrum. I apologised and tried to explain that it was an innocent mistake but he would have none of it.

I corrected my mistake straight away but it took him several days to get over it. Towards the end of the holiday, he explained he was always a small boy for his age and was bullied a lot at school by kids who delighted in calling him Big Brain. No wonder he hated it!

Ever since I always double-check the spelling of names!
:-)
Richard

Aww, Richard, that's sad. Awful that he was bullied and couldn't see Big Brain as a compliment, but also sad for him to not be over it at age 35.

And it sure is an event to make sure that you watch your spelling.
Thanks for sharing your story!!

Glad it gave you a tickle Hannie. Keep smiling.
