The Worst Kind of Fear

Last night I went to close the my bedroom curtains looking forward to a good night's sleep only to find an enormous black spider clinging to the curtain that was furthest away from the window. To say that I panicked would be an understatement. Visions oƒ that spider crawling over me as I slept shot through my mind as I tried to figure out a way to get it outside quickly before it found a place to hide and render my bedroom as a no go zone.

Somehow I managed (with the help oƒ a plastic jug) to catch it in the curtains and throw it out oƒ the window. When I got my breath back I found my trusty Android and asked Google about large black spiders. It turns out that they are harmless and usually shy away from irrational humans like me. Black widow spiders are another subject which I don't really wish to pursue at the moment!

Anyway it got me thinking about all the irrational fears that we have nowadays that we allow to limit us in so many ways.

Fear of:

  • success
  • not being enough
  • making videos
  • putting ourselves out there on social media
  • being our authentic selves
  • Being judged (those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter)
  • Reaching out
  • Sharing our fears with another human being

Usually we just need to "do the thing" and the fear disappears and is replaced by a feeling of elation and happiness at our new achievement.

So why not let today be the day that you cross off at least one fear from your fear list Most things are not nearly as hard as you expect them to be! Go on - just do it!

Dealing with spiders is never pleasant. Glad you were able to get rid of it.

Susan

Hi Hilary

Arachnophobia is fairly common.

My wife is the same way with spiders. 🕷️🕸️🕷️😎

Hi Hilary.
Poor little 🕸️🕷️🕸️

Greetings,
Slavka 👋🕷️👋

I love how you talked about the spider being harmless (which they are) but that's usually how the infestation starts because one little spider would be one too many. So I would just spray it with some perfume as they don't like the smell and will try to crawl away and then use my napkin.

Well anyway, I'm glad that you were able to capture it with a jug so it can safely go out the window. 😅

I know I'm going to offend some folks here. But the second I see any bug on the premises- it's "Open Season"!

A spider on the curtain?? It would have been smashed between the pages of a heavy textbook. Either that or my can of bug spray.

The home should be protected against all invaders!

Isaiah 🙂

I cut spiders some slack, Isaiah! They really don't want to be around us!

Jeff

I'll try to remember that the next time I see one, Jeff. But I'm not making any promises.

Haha, Isaiah! No worries! One must do what they think is best! The occasional Spider that bit me was the one who died! 🤣🤣

Oh my goodness!! I know exactly how you felt. I had a black widow on my washing machine one day and decided I didn't need to do laundry at that time. I was, however, motivated to call a bug spray service. They come around every couple of months and I have no spider issues -- or excuses not to do laundry :)

A broom usually works good!

I had a spider the size of my hand on the wall and that certainly got my attention. It was a Huntsman Spider and they are harmless but you couldn't have convinced me at the time!

Mel

I like how you tied all that together with a GREAT analogy, Hilary!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff

You're very welcome, Hilary!
