Pressing Update: The Step You Can't Skip In WordPress
I recently had an issue with one of my WordPress posts when I tried to change its category. I unchecked the original category it was assigned to and selected a new one. But when I checked the post on my site, it was still showing under the original category. After troubleshooting, I realized the problem came down to one simple mistake-I didn't press the Update button after making the changes.
It's important to remember that WordPress doesn't save any changes until you click Update for the post. Without doing this, your post will stay in its original category, no matter what changes you think you've made.
I also discovered that using the Bulk Edit feature can be helpful when dealing with category assignments for multiple posts. You can select several posts, uncheck their current category, assign them to a new one, and press Apply to make the changes. But even then, pressing Update is key to ensuring everything saves correctly.
So, if you're changing categories or making any edits to your posts, always double-check and hit that Update button. It's a simple step, but it can save you a lot of frustration later on.

Changing and deleting categories can be tricky. I usually have to clear the cache of the old first, and make sure it is redirected to a 410 deletion. Then I can add the new category and assign to it. Google also prefers that we SEO our categories. Rank Math just added this to their software upgrade.
