Me v. My Niche

I have a broad range of interests so, when I first started at WA, I made an extensive list of possible niches; the training sparks creativity and the ideas flowed!

After careful evaluation, one topic clearly rose to the top of the list of possibilities; I had the right experience, I already knew a great deal about the topic, keyword research indicated that there was at least modest interest, and it seemed that it could be monetized with some moderate level of success. It was the perfect choice; I had a winner!

But as I began to progress through the training, I realized something -- I didn't want to work on the website. In fact, I didn't want to work on it at all. I battled through picking a name, but the final choice was pretty mediocre. I bought a domain and experimented with various themes - meh. Once I stopped feeling so overwhelmed (which I discussed in my earlier blog post), I passed the time I had allocated to work on WA by doing training, reading Success Stories, watching Live Chat and giving Feedback, but I dreaded working on the website and nothing in this world, it seemed, could get me to do it.

This was not the excitement I knew I should be feeling!

After giving the matter some serious thought, I realized that the problem wasn't a lack of interest or ability -- it was that stinking niche! As perfect as it had seemed based on all the objective criteria, the niche failed to satisfy a subjective requirement that I hadn't even really considered: I didn't want to write about it! It's something I happen to know quite a bit about, but it's not something I'm terribly interested in.

That realization was a big turning point for me; I went back to my list and this time I incorporated a couple of additional criteria: Which topics did I feel passionate about? Which topics were things I'd like talk and/or write about every day? Which topics included opportunities for me to really help readers by providing valuable information?

I immediately switched gears and started over with a completely new niche in an area that I do feel passionate about. And because now it's something I want to work on, I look forward to working on, and do work on, it's been amazing how everything has come together.

As Kyle says in training, there is a world full of niches out there; find the ones that are right for you, and you'll find yourself soaring!

Thank you for reading this blog post! Best wishes to all for your continued success.
