I have had a few issues with wp tonight not doing as it has been told, unless its just me being inpatient ah well hope it is okay tomorrow as i will do a bit more then.

I sent a query to support about the issue.
They didn't say why is was happening, but they installed the "Classic Editor" plug-in and the fault is gone.

I want a splashpage without any menus, i.e. just a basic HTML page.

I still need the other pages & posts to have the menus, etc..
Your best bet is a splash page plugin.

I would probably go with the second one.

Why do the images you see on selecting new themes not appear when you activate them?
The majority of the images you see are examples of what the theme will look like after you add whichever images you desire.

It just seems so difficult to find a theme, if it's not even how it looks.

All themes will not look like the example when selecting them because you have to add the images which is part of your content.
When you find a theme you like, as you add content, it will begin to look like what is shown in the example. And you can even customize the themes to look more unique.
