Mind Your Mental Health
As our businesses progress and develop it is important for us to keep in mind our mental health and how we look after it. I say this because building a business has both major highs and lows, when something great happens like making a sale or someone signs up to our mailing list our brains release endorphins and we get rewarded by getting a rush of happiness.
Then we have the lows when things are just not going the way we want them to, we might get a slow down in traffic, or not many of your visitors are converting which ultimately leads to frustration and anxiety.
These two extremes can lead to long term depression, and depression of course can lead to suicidal ideation. (I'm not a doctor but I work in mental health so I like to think I know a few things about states of the mind).
Remember to take a break...
Yep, this sounds like an obvious statement to make but how many of you take breaks on a regular basis to clear your head and take time out?
I'm guilty of this myself, there have been many a time when I've sat in front of my laptop from dusk till dawn and I've not moved, not even to visit the bathroom or eat because I've been so engrossed in what I was doing.
In fact I've done this a few times just recently and guess what? I didn't hardly make any progress whatsoever, quite the opposite! All that ended up happening was me staring into nothingness and a blinking cursor :(
After the last time, I promised myself that I would take regular intervals so I wouldn't feel so down and dejected, so I made a plan of action, which is to:
- Practice mindfulness techniques before, during and after working on my business.
- Save my work, close my laptop and go for a walk.
- Get something to eat and drink.
- Take a power nap.
- Etc.
Before you ask, I don't do all of these things in order but I'll commit to doing one of these things before during or after working on my business. Another method I practice is to only focus on one or at a stretch two tasks to be completed as so I don't wind up over stretching myself and try to do everything at once.
The result?
Now I'm simply tons more focused and more importanty productive. The truth is that you can take a break in any way you like just as long as you have a breather away from your work and you're not glued to device all day and night.
Your work isn't going to pack its things up and leave you, it will still be there where you left off, remember that :)
The moral of this post...
Be mindful of your mental health, keep it well and ensure it's firing on all cylinders because in the long run it will look after you and your business, your productivity will be greater and your mind, body and soul will be that much more enriched, not to mention your bank balance!
Cheers much,
Pete :)
