Choosing Your First Niche or Topic for Your Site? Help is Here!

Choosing your first niche or topic for your site seems to be a question I see a lot.

The important thing here is that you will be able to write a lot of content, get the content ranked, and be able to monetize the site.

If you think about those three things when selecting your niche topic you will find a winner.

Is My Site Too Broad?

I have two theories on this. The idea here is that we are going to drive a lot of traffic to the site and we are taught to narrow our niche.

Now I agree that if we go to broad that it will be very hard to get the main site ranked in the top search positions for the keyword phrase.

For example, if you chose Golf as your niche. Well it's going to be very hard to get the site in the top search positions for Golf because there is just too much competition.

But there is no reason that you can't rank individual pieces of content for more narrow keywords and still bring traffic to that site.

So what I'm saying is going for Golf alone is not a good idea and going for Titleist Golf Balls is also not a good idea. In the first case you will never get the site ranked, in the second case just how much can you write about Titleist Golf Balls.

So what I'm saying is that it's probably a good idea to go more narrow on the main site but don't worry about that too much as you will be able to rank lots of content targeting much narrower keywords.

The key here is that you don't go so narrow with the main site that you don't have enough areas that you can write content around but you don't go so broad that you'll never get the main site ranked.

Does this make sense?

Is There Plenty of Content?

If we get the first part correct, we choose a niche where we have plenty to write about then we will have no problem finding content.

In my example of Golf the easiest way I know to find a good niche is to simply put just Golf in the Keyword Research tool, Google the main topic, and search amazon for the main topic so you can get ideas of what other golf related topics exist.

Some results are:

Keyword Tool

  • used golf clubs
  • golf club sets
  • wilson golf clubs
  • womens golf clubs
  • golf news

Google

  • golf channel
  • golf news
  • golf course
  • golf digest

Amazon

  • Golf Club Bag Accessories
  • Golf Equipment
  • Golf Iron Sets
  • Men's Golf Clothing

As I look thought these ideas I think what topic has a lot I can write about and something that should be easy to monetize?

Golf News is a topic you can constantly write about. Golf Equipment is a topic that you could find plenty of products for also Golf Accessories.

How about a site that talks about Golf Equipment and Accessories. It seems that you could do a ton of product reviews around this and never run out of content to write about.

Can You Monetize the Site?

The last and probably the most important question is, "Can I monetize the site".

There are many ways to monetize a site. You can sell advertising on the site like Adsense, or you can find affiliate products on places like Amazon, Clickbank, or Commission Junction.

The main thing is can you monetize the niche topic you chose?

In my previous research I was thinking about this already. I use Amazon to find buying ideas to build my niche around. By finding things that can be sold in that niche you have made sure you can monetize your site.

Final Thoughts

Finding a good niche isn't all that hard when you keep these three (3) important key factors in mind.

  1. Don't go to broad or to narrow.
  2. Look for a niche topic where you will always have something to write about.
  3. Make sure there is a way to monetize your content and site.

I hope this helps to break down the process of "Choosing Your First Niche or Topic for Your Site".

Helpful as always, Glen, thanks!
Think we told you before that we went way too broad on our first niche. We love the name, though and know now how to narrow it down and what we will do with it in the future, though. So, it's all a good learning experience.
Now doing Bootcamp and making lots of great progress. We read and digest all your posts because what you write and the way you write it really resonates with us.
Thanks and enjoy a great week!

Yes, there is a lot of confusion around this and it's the starting point.

I hope this helps others to easily choose the niche topic.
