Competitive Advantage No. 3 - Expertise
Introduction
The longer I've been in the online business space, the more I realize that there are literally 1,000s of ways to make money on the Internet.
I say this with respect to:
- Type of business (e-commerce, print-on-demand, affiliate marketing, etc.)
- Method of delivery (digital product, app, service, coaching, membership, etc.)
- Niche (hobby, fitness, affinity group, interest, etc.)
And that is part of the problem right there! There are too many choices and too many choices within choices.
The Usual Route
When faced with so many options, we can become paralyzed, overwhelmed or simply attempt to master as many of these choices as possible.
In the online marketing space, we might try to tackle PPC, SEO, content, video, e-mail, social media and affiliate marketing not to mention dabbling in webinars, podcasts, FB live, blogging, e-books, e-courses and the like.
In our niches, we may try to incorporate every conceivable angle, prospect type, product or offer for fear of leaving money on the table.
This often leads to frustration.
We do not stick with something long enough to see the benefit nor do we develop enough expertise to parlay that into something we can bring to the market.
The Internet Rewards Expertise
And yet the longer I am in this space, the more I realize that people (myself included) are willing to pay for expertise.
I used to think $997 for a course on creating a webinar was outrageous, until I realized I could save about a year's worth of time and I could make my investment back after a few solid webinars.
Your competitive advantage is expertise, so you need to develop it, within your niche or business type.
How Does This Translate?
There is a woman, Teresa L. Greenway, who has made a fortune teaching people how to make Sourdough Bread. It's not bread baking in general, it's baking Sourdough bread. That's it. That's expertise.
I've seen sites that are ONLY dedicated to Wordpress or ClickFunnels or YouTube or Facebook advertising. They are not trying to be all things to all people. The sites are clean, laser-focused, content rich and they literally get thousands of views per day (by targeted visitors).
When you hit those types of sites, you immediately sense that this persons KNOWS what they are talking about. You want to learn from those people. You want to buy from them.
The online business space is starving for expertise, and a hungry audience is good news for you.
