Coaching at Grass Roots Level
Your just about to finish work, pick up your child and head to training to be surrounded by excited kids bursting at their seams, energy levels in overload, balls being kicked left, right and center and then it starts "can we play a game , can we play a game, can I be striker, I want to be goalie, what are we doing ?????
Then it hits you,"I haven't really thought about that, umm what will we start with?" By this stage you are, if not about to loose some but all control of the bursting energized kids.
Honestly we have all done it when we started and it can be frustrating to hold it together for some.
Have a plan
1. It is very important to have a plan in place even for the youngest age you are training.
Always insure you allowing yourself at least half an hour to set up, if not a little bit longer as you will start to have excited parents show early and want to help out and also have a chat.
Do not be put off by these parents as this is a good sign. It shows that there is enthusiasm amongst the group and people enjoy being able to connect with you.
2. As soon as the kids turn up, get them kicking, dribbling, Messi or Rohnaldo tricks anything that connects their feet and mind to the ball and keeps them excited.
Allow no longer than 3-5mins.
3. Start putting your plan in action with a WARM UP of the particular session you had in mind.
Allow 10-15mins.
4. Quickly move into the MIDDLE PART of your session working on the key areas of your session trying to incorporate goals where possible small or large. This makes the session more realistic.
Allow 15-20mins.
5. FINNISH OFF with a small sided game, making sure the kids are trying to implement the key skills based on your session.
Coach on the run, trying to avoid stopping the game, use key phrases,
-Can you pass to your mate
-Can you lift your head
-Can you check both your shoulders
-Can you get a good touch on the ball etc.
Allow 15-30mins depending on age and ability.
