How to IMPROVE a Rural County Publishing Co.-Part 2
As I stated in our 1st edition on about:
NewspapersThe MOST regarding thing a publishing co. can do is to prlnt
the news on behalf of the county's citizens.
The news is usually determined by journalists who were trained by their colleges(or universities).
An one former publisher stated to a current one, "...Your job is easy. All you have to is be like the 'chamber of commerce' for every community across the county..."
But are ALL publications following the former publisher's advice?
Recent history has shown that several(if NOT many) publications have DECLINED in quality NOR are they TOTALLY dedicated to local & county news.
County Board Meetings .vs.....
In the same newspaper in my home county, the News staff
typically implies that the public wants 33% to be concerned about what the COUNTY Comissioners are thinking(with another 33% on the COUNTY Crime rate & the other 33% on misc.)
Ideally, the % on misc. should be HIGHER.
Currently, the county newspaper has on the 2rd page of every single 2-weekly issue, each county commissioner's name, phone number, email, & locations of where each represents.
....Local Board Meetings
What about ALL board meetings held by the cities, the townships & the schools?
What if some of them are talking about the possibility of putting a millage to maintain or even raise taxes?
What if some 'LOCALS' indicate a 'yes'(or maybe), then why NOT have then 'rotate'(with the county commissioners) by printing their names & emails, as well?
At least the county commissioners & the newspaper should find such changes to be 'refreshing'.
Closing Note
County newspapers should consider that 25%/75% of the News should be County/Local.
Again, reviving & restoring trust in the media starts at the LOCAL & COUNTY level.
