Today is Christmas Jumper Day β€” No, really! That fun, cosy, colourful moment in the festive season when we pull on our most joyful(!) knitwear and do a bit of good at the same time. If you've not heard of the idea before, then you only have to watch the Bridget Jones films to understand our British obsession with Christmas jumpers! And, also with... wait for it... matching Christmas pyjamas!! Yes, you really can buy matching sets of Christmas pyjamas for the whole family (and I know people who do) and even some for the dog!

Anyway, I digress slightly.

Christmas Jumper Day

The Christmas Jumper Day idea is simple: wear your best (or worst!) festive jumper and donate to Save the Children to help support children who need a bit of extra care and hope around the world.

Christmas jumpers, sometimes called ugly sweaters because of their over-the-top decorations, became really popular in Britain in the 1980s, when TV presenters and entertainers helped put them on the map as fun holiday staples. And as previously mentioned, Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones franchise had some of the best.

A row of Christmas jumpers

Since the first official Christmas Jumper Day in 2012, millions of people in workplaces, schools and communities have joined in, raising tens of millions of pounds to support children’s health, nutrition, learning and safety.

You can read more on their official site, and donate at: https://www.savethechildren.org.uk/christmas-jumper-day

The best bit? You don’t need a brand-new jumper to take part. Save the Children encourages everyone to reuse, swap or decorate something you already have, making it festive and more sustainable all at once.

So today, snuggle into your woolliest, most sparkly, most scene-stealing jumper, share a smile (and maybe a donation), and join in the fun. After all, a bit of silly knitwear can help make the world a kinder place.

Now I'm wondering if this is where we've gotten the idea for "Ugly Christmas sweaters" from over here in the states. πŸ€”

That's become the traditional, standard attire one wears when invited to a Christmas party/gathering, no matter how worn or tattered it is.

Hope you're enjoying your holiday season, Gail πŸŽ„

I am Isaiah, thanks. You too, I hope. Gail

Hey, Gail, thanks for the information. I have never heard of Christmas Jumper Day until here in your post. My pastor won't love the Xmas because he believes it's not just another way of spelling Christmas but to 'cross' or cancel Christmas with the "x," though that idea sounds outdated to me as a person.

These days, I don't enjoy Christmas as I used to in the 1990s deep in the village, maybe because I have read more about its origins, which were not Christian at all. The higher you go, the cooler it becomes, and I agree. Not only in the physical sense but in the mental sense as well.

Anyway, those are some thoughts on my end, which might be off-topic, but I felt inspired to share them here. Merry Christ-Mass in advance!

It's a good point John. The true meaning of Christmas has been lost.

Thanks, Peter. Let's celebrate, anyhow.

My Mum would have agreed with your pastor! I am not a fan of how commerical Christmas has become, but I do celelbrate for many other reasons, and I think everyone needs to find their own beliefs, values and follow those. So I can appreciate lot of different traditions from all over the world and at all times of year; and then I can choose the ones that resonate most with me, which is quite an eclectic mix, I can tell you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have a wonderful festive season, however you celebrate. Gail
