BUILDING A SURVIVAL FIRE
The more skills you know when it comes to surviving in the wilderness, the more likely you will be successful. What if you are in the wilderness and you know you will have to build a fire' Or a mishap of some sort occurs, and you realize we are going be here overnight. Many would agree a fire is a must, if outside temperature is not in your favor. Do you have the skill to build a fire ?
As you have learned from this website Carry2Survive , you will have more than one source of fire starter on your person or in your possession. The worst sentence I have in my mind, when in the bush area, is what I named this Post."ABOUT TO BUILD A FIRE".
FIRE STARTERS
Having fire starters is one thing, this could include a basic lighter or even wooden matches, also a flint rod, and your knife for striking. But what are you going to burn ?

The number one thing you need is dry materials which I call FUEL, that you can easily ignite. Try to have some dryer lint in your backpack as backup. My two, go to materials is dry birch bark and dried up pine needles. These two are my initial ignition fire starting fuels. When I see them while I am walking in the bush during the day I gather hand fulls from off the ground and store them in a dry bag in my backpack until I need them. When I reach my resting or sleeping area, which should be well before sundown. Giving me time to gather the rest of my fire material for the night and, if I need to build a shelter or comfy laying spot with branches under the stars.
"MOST IMPORTANT IS MY THIRD STEP , I KNOW IT IS BEST, BY FEELING IT."
The best fire kindling, my next material for my fire, as I gather will be dead twigs and branches. " I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD ANYONE SAY WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY BEFORE. THIS MAY SHOCK SOME PEOPLE ". "I have proven this time and time again"!
When I am gathering kindling to start a fire. Small dead twigs and branches are not equal.
Hold several of them in your hands and you will be able to feel different temperatures from them. Practice this for a while, you will find that the "cooler" a piece of wood feels, the less likely that dead twig or branch will be a good fuel for your initial fire starting. leave it on the ground. Pick the warmer feeling ones and your fire will start well.
Final steps, move up in size of wood as you gather. Have a significant amount of fire wood for the night, and morning cooking if you plan to. Also have some of that kindling that feels warmest in your hand nearby incase while sleeping, the fire dwindles.
I treat a fire as an all day gathering task, as I travel in the bush or even for my stove in the camp.
I never want to be all of a sudden, "about to build a fire" like my title says. Be prepared beforehand !
