Hi WA Friends!

If you enjoy my guitar posts, here's one that's a little different because he's not a 6-string slinger.

Please help me celebrate Roger Glover's Birthday, the famous bass player, songwriter, and producer, best known for playing in the rock bands Deep Purple and Rainbow!

Here is a basic breakdown of Roger's musical journey:

From The Madisons to Deep Purple

Roger started playing music in London with his first band, The Madisons. Later, the band merged into another group called Episode Six, which included Ian Gillan, who would also become famous as the singer in Deep Purple. In 1969, both Glover and Gillan joined Deep Purple, becoming part of the band's most well-known lineup.

Albums like "Deep Purple in Rock" (1970), "Fireball" (1971), and "Machine Head" (1972) were huge hits! These albums have some of the most famous riffs in rock history. Rogerโ€™s basslines were key to making songs like "Smoke on the Water" sound powerful.

Life After Deep Purple: Production & the Rainbow Days

After leaving Deep Purple in 1973, ROger started producing music. He worked with bands like Judas Priest and David Coverdale. He also made his first solo album, "The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast" (1974), which showed how talented he was beyond just playing bass.

In 1979, Roger joined Rainbow, a band started by Ritchie Blackmore. He played on albums like "Down to Earth" (1979) and "Difficult to Cure" (1981). His bass playing helped give these songs a driving low-end.

Back to Purple!: Reuniting the Legacy

In 1984, Roger rejoined Deep Purple and has been part of the band ever since. Albums like "Perfect Strangers" (1984) and "Rapture of the Deep" (2005) showed that his basslines were still powerful and played an important role in the band.

What We're Doing To Celebrate

To mark this great occasion, we're having some family and friends over for food and drink (not more turkey, lol), and we'll be seeing the "Deep Purple - Live at Montreux 1996" DVD.

Yeah, it features Steve Morse instead of Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, but it's one of Roger's best live performances. If there's time, we'll see a Rainbow DVD with Ritchie, the ultimate guitar wizard! Lol ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Hi Frank

"Perfect Strangers" is my all time favorite Deep Purple songs, although there are many more I like.

Happy Birthday, Roger!! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽถ

Keep Rockin!!๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŽธ

Tim ๐ŸŽผ

Hi Tim

Yeah, the organ parts of "Perfect Strangers" are especially cool! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜

Crazy, daddy! 80 and still killin' it! I saw Deep Purple with Uriah Heap and Jethro Tull, I think. It was long ago, and it's a little hazy. Imagine that!

Hi Dave

Wow!! What a trifecta of bands!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Jethro Tull is one of my all time favorites! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

I went to see Tull. At the time, no one was really paying attention to Uriah Heap or Deep Purple, but they were good. Tull was enjoying Aqualung's fame. Remember how cool we were back then? Aw, man, the memories!

Hi Dave

Yeah, Tull is one of the best bands of all time, in my opinion. I adore Martin Barre's guitar playing, and Ian Anderson is simply a musical genius!

Do you know the story of how the band got their name, as told by Ian?

They kept being asked not to come back after they played various local gigs because of the flute thing and the overall sound of their music. So, their manager kept changing the name of the band to random words and phrases.

Actually, Jethro Tull was an agricultural drill inventor, and the name became permanent after they were offered a weekly gig at London's famous Marquee Club. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Keep On Rockin' It! ๐Ÿค˜
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Haha.. a little hazyโ€ฆ lol.
They traveled extensively through the 70.s /
I remember ( lol) seeing Bob Marley in New Zealand and there was a green cloud over the audience..

Lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

Happy birthday to Roger Glover!
Thank you, Frank, for another great tribute. Of course I'll always be a fan of the song called, "Smoke On The Water." Plus I will also be listening to a lot of their other stuff sometime. :)

Myra โ™ฅ๏ธ ๐ŸŽธ

Thanks, Myra ๐Ÿ™

Yeah, Smoke On The Water is an awesome song on a fabulous album (Machine Head). ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Itโ€™s about a Swiss Casino burning down while they were recording their album because some idiot in the audience of a Frank Zappa concert shot off a flare gun. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

As the words go: โ€œSome idiot with a flare gun burned the place to the ground!โ€

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Ah that makes a ton of sense. Thank you for sharing that little detail, Frank. :)

Rock On! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜„
Myra ๐ŸŽธ

Lol, You're welcome, Myra. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Frank ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽธ

You look at these old rockers and they still look pretty good for the most part. Then compare that to politicians like Clintonโ€ฆBill that is, and the life looks sucked out of them.lol.
Maybe I should have rephrased that..hehe

Steve

Hi Steve

Haha, really???

Hereโ€™s one of the better pictures of Keith Richards, who Elton John called an โ€œarthritic monkey!โ€ Lol ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜
Frank ๐ŸŽธ

Bam! Haha!

Lol ๐Ÿ˜†

I hear he was Adamโ€™s ( Adam and Eve) dad. lol

Stevoi

Hee Hee Hee! ๐Ÿ˜

A Rock cod.. whoopsโ€ฆ

I possibly should have paraphrased that with an AI tool, like Monicโ€ฆahhhโ€ฆ.whoops.. bad to worseโ€ฆ lol

Nice! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž

Love Deep Purple and Rainbow Frank. Favourite album Made In Japan just because it was probably the first live album I heard as a young boy.
At my wedding my nwife wanted the colour "plum" for table decorations, sashes for chairs and mens ties so I was to wear a "plum" tie.
I said "That's not plum, it's deep purple". I wore a Deep Purple tie!

Rick

Hi Rick

Yeah, both awesome bands! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I'd probably choose "Made In Japan," too, if I had to pick a single best album. I love the note that Ritchie holds forever on his guitar at the beginning of Highway Star! Lol ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Great wedding story! Haha ๐Ÿคฃ

Rock On! ๐Ÿค˜
