Google Is Testing An Unreleased Generative AI Platform
(Title image by DALL-E 3)
Hi WA Friends!
Have you heard that Google is repurposing already published information with its experimental program to create aggregated content?
Here is a summary of the details (with a little help from ChatGPT):
What Is It?
Google has initiated a private program with selected independent publishers, providing them with beta access to an unreleased generative AI platform aimed at aiding news production. This collaboration involves the publishers generating a specific amount of content over 12 months, in exchange for a "5-figure" yearly stipend and access to tools for creating relevant content at no cost.
Why Do It?
Google's intention is to explore AI-enabled tools to assist journalists, especially from smaller publishers, by leveraging factual content from public data sources, emphasizing that these tools are designed to "support rather than replace the role of journalists in content creation."
How It Works
The program offers a suite of AI tools that allow publishers, particularly those with limited resources, to efficiently create aggregated content. This is achieved by summarizing information from external reports, such as government releases or other news outlets, into new articles. Google's initiative, part of the Google News Initiative (GNI) launched in 2018, aims to provide technological and training support to publishers.
Program Requirements
Participating publishers are required to produce a significant volume of content, three articles a day, a weekly newsletter, and one marketing campaign per month, all without needing consent from the original content creators.
Concerns From Critics
The initiative has received mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a way for Google to address commercial challenges it helped create, amidst broader concerns regarding Google's impact on the publishing industry.
This process also raises concerns about the ethical implications of using AI to repurpose existing content without acknowledgment. Critics argue that this approach may undermine the original mission of GNI by potentially diverting traffic from original sources and not contributing new information to the public discourse, thus questioning the value it adds to the news ecosystem.

Let Me Know What You Think
What do you think of Google's new "experimental" approach on re-publishing aggregated content after clearly stating that it is looking for unique helpful content?
How do you think this will affect online marketing in the long run?
Let me know in the comments, AND ...

A quote by Peter McWilliams,
β The news media are, for the most part, the bringers of bad news... and it's not entirely the media's fault, bad news gets higher ratings and sells more papers than good news.β
So, is this journalist AI going to create more bad news, make fake news more believable etc?
Maybe time for a truth or fact meter too!

I'm not worried though..... just keep on moving forward and enjoy life as much as possible I say!!

I have been since the wife got out of hospital this morning!!!
Nothing serious, just stupidity in my opinion!!
Now I am off to a neighbour's apartment for an evening of fun.... maybe!!
We don't know them well but they keep on inviting us, so the excuses not to go have finally ended!!
I let you know later how things go!!
Maybe they have a guitar???

Thanks Frank... it was only a twisted ankle, she insists on walking to the office with these stupid high heels on all the time!!
The evening wasn't too bad, but can you believe... no guitar!!!

Hi Nick
Good news about the ankle, but tough break with the guitar! Maybe they were hiding it?? Lol π
When we go visiting somewhere new, we bring something we love to eat. That keeps the evening from being a total bust, because you never know! Haha
Iβm great at making a quick exit. π
Rock On! π€

They must have been Frank, I mean who doesn't have a guitar????
I always take some food as well.... last night I whipped up some tuna empanadas and some bolinhos de bacalhao!
They went down much better than what was on offer there!!
I did make a quick exit to the kebab shop at around 2230 though!!!
Rock On!!

Interesting article Frank!
I really can't see this being a good thing...they'll be using AI to create more news...ha, makes no sense to me. They already all sound the same, lol.
But, I guess Google is going to do whatever Google wants to do. No consent or acknowledgment to the original creators doesn't sound like a good idea either...sounds shady to me. I'm thinking a lot of the original creators won't be too happy about it either.
Guess we'll see where this goes in the days ahead.
Thanks for sharing Frank! Good to know what's going on with Google.
Keep on rockin'!πΈπ
Best wishes :) ~Sherry
